Inter 0-0 Roma: interesting in theory, but not on the pitch
September 17, 2011

The starting line-ups

Two sides lacking confidence contested a fairly tame 0-0 draw in Milan.

Gian Piero Gasperini reverted to a three-man defence, but went with 3-4-1-2, as expected, rather than his favoured 3-4-3. Joel Obi came in on the left, and Wesley Sneijder was the number ten.

Luis Enrique stuck with his preferred 4-3-3, but made a surprise decision to start two midfielders at full-back – Rodrigo Taddei on the left, Simone Perrotta on the right.

Roma generally dominated possession but lacked ideas in the final third, whilst Inter had decent moments but had no cohesion upfront. The game fitted the 0-0 scoreline.

Formations and theory

The most interesting thing about this game was pre-match consideration of how the sides would play. Gasperini’s 3-4-3 was terrible at Palermo, and on the basis of that, another game with the same formation would have been foolish – you can’t play the same way and expect different results immediately. With Sneijder impressive when he came on against Palermo, moving into a deep, central position rather than staying in his wide-left starting role – plus Diego Forlan not comfortable out wide – it made sense to switch to 3-4-1-2.

That was only on the basis of last week’s display, though. It changes completely when you consider the way Roma were playing – with two players completely out of position at full-back. Leave them free, and they’re comfortable – no major defensive work, happy to move forward and influence the game in possession. Occupy them with a tricky opponent, and they would have looked extremely uncomfortable – and for that reason, it may have been worth Gasperini sticking with the 3-4-3, putting Sneijder up against Perrotta and Forlan against Taddei. He would have been crucified had it failed for being wedded to a system which doesn’t suit his players, but it was arguably the right way to go considering the extremely unusual situation at full-back.

Battles

In the end, Gasperini went 3-4-1-2. The Roma full-backs were free to push on up the pitch, and in a move borrowed from his old club Barcelona, Enrique told Daniele De Rossi to drop into the back, turning Roma into a back three, and a 3-4-3. David Pizarro and Sneijder broadly picked up each other in the middle (which did more harm than good to the game as a spectacle) whilst Javier Zanetti nullified Miralem Pjanic.

Roma had more of the ball – so why were they unable to open up a defence which has looked so dodgy? Totti, arguably, was not the right player for this situation as the central forward. He wanted to come deeper and deeper – maybe understandable given the lack of creativity in midfield – but Roma didn’t have the cohesion to put together the main move this system is meant to produce: Totti coming deep and the wide players moving into goalscoring positions. In the absence of such an understanding, it might have been better to have played three more direct forwards, take advantage of the 3 v 3 situation in that zone, and exploit the lack of pace in Inter’s backline. Totti played a couple of decent passes, but Inter were more than happy to let him come into a zone patrolled by Esteban Cambiasso, and let Roma play in front of them. A couple of bright moves came from Fabio Borini outpacing Andrea Rannochia, but there wasn’t enough of that.

Inter’s brightest moments came when Mauro Zarate came on for Diego Milito – he often played up against Taddei, who immediately looked uncomfortable against such a tricky opponent. Zarate had a couple of attempts that went narrowly wide. Gasperini’s mentality was summed up by his late substitution – forward Forlan off, midfielder Muntari on. He was happy with a point. Maybe Enrique was too – his changes were incremental.

Conclusion
Was this a tactical battle? It didn’t feel like it. It was more like two under-pressure managers focusing upon getting their new charges used to a new way of playing. Neither tried to exploit the particular weaknesses of their opponent, neither looked like scoring. There is still plenty of work to do for both.

Villas-Boas faces his first big EPL test

By Michael Cox
Special to ESPN.com

Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has gotten off to a strong start, but it's the match against United that will be his first real Premier League test. How will he handle the pressure?

However you look at it, Sunday's trip to Old Trafford is Andre Villas-Boas' first real test as Chelsea manager. Just five games into his tenure, he faces the fixture that has effectively decided the destination of the league title in the past two seasons; in 2009-10 Chelsea won 2-1 in April to leapfrog United at the top, and last season United won by the same scoreline to put itself a point away from the title.

Villas-Boas should be thankful that he's had some time to prepare for this clash because an amazing number of his predecessors have started their Chelsea careers with a game against United. Claudio Ranieri began with a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho's opening game was a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge, Avram Grant took over on short notice for a 2-0 reverse in Manchester, and Carlo Ancelotti's debut was an eventful draw in the 2009 Community Shield. Four games to prepare for United is a rare privilege for a Chelsea manager these days.

His results so far have been decent -- no outstanding performances, but 10 points from 12 in the league, and an opening-day win in the Champions League. Off the pitch, however, Villas-Boas has quietly gone about his business well, particularly in the transfer market. The acquisitions of Juan Mata and Raul Meireles have revolutionized Chelsea's midfield, Daniel Sturridge is finally being given a chance up front, and the use of young Oriol Romeu shows Villas-Boas wants a more technical game plan. Meanwhile, Frank Lampard and John Terry were rested for the Champions League in midweek, and Didier Drogba doesn't seem a first choice. Chelsea needed freshening up, and the 33-year-old Portuguese manager has done that very well.

This is the first big game, though, and Villas-Boas has a good record in important encounters. With his first club, Academica, there was probably only one fixture you could describe as "big" -- the bottom-of-the-table clash with Vitoria de Setubal, which Academica won 3-0 to move off the bottom and leave the relegation battle behind it.

Villas-Boas' move to Porto saw some huge games, in fact -- notably the Classicos against Benfica, the biggest fixture in Portugal. Villas-Boas' first Classico was a legendary 5-0 win at home, and his second saw Porto win 2-1 to clinch the league title at the Estadio da Luz. Porto's performances in its successful Europa League campaign also indicated its manager was up for the big occasion.

Glyn Kirk/AFP/Getty Images
Villas-Boas has been putting on quite the show during Chelsea matches.

So what will his approach be against United? It is well known that Villas-Boas is a keen student of the game, someone who uses scouts and videos extensively in order to pinpoint weaknesses in his opponents. In that 5-0 win against Benfica, he believed Benfica was vulnerable in its left-back zone, where David Luiz -- ironically, now one of his own players -- was being played out of position. Therefore, Villas-Boas pushed his right-sided midfield, Fernando Belluschi, higher up the pitch, and he combined with Hulk to constantly unlock Benfica's defense. All five goals came from Benfica's left, the area that was targeted. That is Villas-Boas' trademark -- he imposes an open, positive style of football, but also varies specific tactical elements from game to game.

Manchester United has started the season strongly, but Villas-Boas will have noticed some areas of weakness. The Red Devils often look too vulnerable between the lines of defense and midfield (amazingly, they've conceded more shots than any other Premier League side so far), while Patrice Evra looked shaky even in the crushing 8-2 defeat of Arsenal. Concerns about David De Gea have been exaggerated, but Villas-Boas might attempt to come up with a tactic to trouble him.

The key man is Mata, whose Chelsea career is off to an extremely strong start. He can drift in from the left flank to cause United problems in front of its defense, and his combination play so far with Fernando Torres has worked well. Torres continues to look out of form in front of goal, but two assists in the Champions League show that he is contributing to the side, and he has a decent record at Old Trafford. On that note, Ramires is another important player in this match -- he needs to provide the drive in midfield to help Chelsea play a more "vertical" game, in Torres' words.

The biggest factor, though, is motivation. How much command does Villas-Boas have over the Chelsea players? It has been a dressing room notorious for being dominated by one or two star players, and we're still yet to see how much the Chelsea side is prepared to work for its new coach. How much do the players trust him? How closely will they follow his instructions? The likes of Norwich, West Brom, Sunderland and Stoke were unlikely to highlight any weaknesses here, but United certainly will.

No other side in Europe starts big home games as strongly as United -- Chelsea will know that from Javier Hernandez's goal after 36 seconds last season -- and Villas-Boas will have to get his players fired up from the first whistle. It is early in the season, but this is a crucial game in Chelsea's new era.

Ten points on Manchester United 3-1 Chelsea
September 18, 2011

The starting line-ups

A crazily open game with no overall pattern, so here are some disparate observations.

1. Early on, there was an amazing lack of pressure upon the player in possession in midfield, particularly when Anderson and Darren Fletcher had the ball. This seems to be an early trend this season around Europe – in Serie A games it has been particularly obvious that sides aren’t closing down until the opposition get into the final third of the pitch. Considering Barcelona are currently the best side around and base their game without the ball around pressing, it’s a strange development.
2. When Manchester United played Chelsea four times last season, the major trend was that Chelsea needed a strong player to stay goalside of Wayne Rooney – when he dropped into the hole, he was a major threat. Andre Villas-Boas wasn’t naive enough to go without a holder, but he did play Raul Meireles there. The Portuguese midfielder is a functional player who can play there (arguably his major quality is his ability to ‘do a job’; it’s difficult to identify a particular area of the game he excels at), but probably not against a player as dangerous as Rooney. Jon Obi Mikel may have been a better bet:
3. United have often been extremely fluid in attacking positions this season, but today there were much more structured. The wide players tended to stay wider, for example – compare Young’s positioning today with his action zones against Tottenham on the opening day.

<hold> by Guardian Chalkboards

4. The interesting thing about this week’s “story” about Fernando Torres criticising his teammates was that Torres actually offered a good analysis of the reasons why he hasn’t thrived at Chelsea. His major source of goals at Liverpool was from through-balls played into his path, and his comments that he wanted a more ‘vertical’ game at Chelsea with creative midfielders who played the ball more quickly was a fine analysis. It doesn’t excuse his own poor finishing, but it does explain why he hasn’t suited Chelsea – or why Chelsea hasn’t suited him. His brighter performance today came because Chelsea were trying to slide balls through the defence – see his goal, as well as his inexplicable miss.
5. In hindsight, this wasn’t a game for Frank Lampard. Mikel could have dealt with Rooney, and Chelsea would have been able to press better, as well as assist Torres more effectively, with two of Ramires, Meireles and Juan Mata playing just ahead. Lampard has been an extremely effective player – without ever being an extremely talented player – for many years, largely because he was perfect for a specific role in a specific system. Villas-Boas has changed that system, and now roles have changed, even within the same starting formation. It is too soon to write off Lampard, but he may have to adapt to retain his place as a regular.
6. If Villas-Boas is trying to modernise Chelsea and create a better passing side, he’d do well to look at his centre-backs’ ability on the ball. Jonny Evans had a 95% pass completion rate, Phil Jones’ was 88%, but John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic both finished on 77%.
7. Throughout all Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides, perhaps the main similarity has been the use of width, and the use of diagonal balls. That was particularly obvious today – Evans played a great crossfield ball to Nani for the goal, and Anderson did the same shortly before Nani set up Javier Hernandez in the first half. Rooney often dropped deep and played a shorter diagonal. When a 4-4-2 / 4-4-1-1 meets a 4-3-3, often the main advantage for the former is the fact that the wingers are often immediately against the opposition full-back – the wide forward in the 4-3-3 usually watches the opposition full-back rather than covers his own. Twice in a row at Old Trafford, United’s right-winger has dominated Ashley Cole.
8. When ahead, players who can come off the bench and play simple passes to keep the ball are invaluable. Michael Carrick is the classic example, but Dimitar Berbatov did well, not conceding possession once from 14 passes.
9. United conceded 22 shots here, 22 at Bolton, 20 against Arsenal, 21 against West Brom and 16 against West Brom. These are surprisingly high figures (they’ve allowed more shots than any other Premier League team) – the question is whether this is because of defensive slackness, or because opponents are overly-keen to test David De Gea.
10. Despite a couple of errors here, Villas-Boas is doing a good job at Chelsea. The side needed an overhaul of its first XI and its general football ideology, and already the side seems fresher, younger and more technical. They competed well here, and were unfortunate to be 3-0 down at half-time. Some managers would have feared a thrashing and shut up shop, but the introduction of Nicolas Anelka for Lampard – and a change to more of a 4-2-1-3 – showed bravery, positivity and confidence in his players, and it broadly worked well.

by Guardian Chalkboards

Tottenham 4-0 Liverpool: Tottenham dominate
September 18, 2011

The starting line-ups

A wondergoal got them going and the rest came when Liverpool had a numerical disadvantage, but Tottenham were clearly the better side in this match.

Harry Redknapp used his 4-4-2, with Niko Kranjcar out on the right – Rafael van der Vaart was half-fit, and on the bench.
Kenny Dalglish seemed to begin with a very narrow system – Charlie Adam very narrow on the left and Stewart Downing out on the right – perhaps to counteract Tottenham’s wing threat, which would come from the left through Bale, rather than the right through Kranjcar.
Tottenham began brightly, pressing Liverpool in midfield and keeping possession well themselves. Charlie Adam, in particular, was given no time on the ball to spray passes across the pitch – as a result, he ended with his second-lowest pass completion rate in his Premier League career, according to Opta. Perhaps this frustration also contributed towards his red card midway through the first half.
Possession
Tottenham kept the ball particularly well (even at 11 v 11), which was impressive considering Liverpool tried to pack the centre of the pitch early on. Luka Modric played passes to the flanks, Scott Parker also provided distribution from deeper, and Kranjcar came into the middle of the pitch, and enjoyed the fact that he had space down that side.
The front two, who dovetailed well at Wolves last week, again had a good game together. Jermain Defoe dropped into intelligent positions between the lines, whilst Adebayor often worked the channels and brought the Liverpool centre-backs out of the back. They both came deep, offered another passing option, and finished with impressive passing stats – Adebayor for how often he was involved, Defoe because he didn’t once give the ball away.

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

The most obvious theme from the first half was Liverpool’s indiscipline. They continually gave away free-kicks, particularly just outside of the box to (their) left, and the poor tackling brought various separate problems. Most obviously, it resulted in two of their players getting sent off, but it also gave Tottenham good shooting opportunities from dead ball situations.
11 v 10
The real tactical excitement came after Liverpool went down to ten, with Charlie Adam dismissed. Dalglish kept the same ten players on the pitch, and made the surprising decision to stick Andy Carroll out on the left. Maybe Dalglish wanted to cause Kyle Walker problems in the air, but Carroll looked uncomfortable and didn’t have the energy to track Walker when Liverpool didn’t have the ball (which was the majority of the time). Putting Suarez out wide would have made more sense, or alternatively Liverpool had two players on the bench – Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy – who naturally shuttle from a wide role to a support striker position.
Tottenham played the 11 v 10 well – they kept width, kept the ball and tired Liverpool. That said, they didn’t produce too many clear-cut chances, and had to wait until Liverpool got Martin Skrtel sent off for their second goal.
11 v 9
It’s difficult to argue that Dalglish could have done anything to get Liverpool back in the game here. Competing with nine men is vaguely possible if you’re at 0-0 and can grind out a draw – but since Liverpool needed to get back into the game, it was hopeless.
Conclusion
This could have been an extremely interesting game. For the first few minutes it was – Tottenham pressed brilliantly, and Adam’s problems summed up Liverpool as a whole: unable to find space, unable to play the ball forward. The narrowness can help retain possession, but it does mean the opposition have to cover less space and do less work to close down.
Dalglish was in a difficult situation with ten men, but using Carroll on the flank was a strange decision that didn’t seem to bring any benefits – Liverpool couldn’t get the ball forward, and Carroll didn’t offer much defensively. A change was needed when Liverpool had ten – when it was nine, it was game over.

Napoli 3-1 Milan: Counter-attack and Cavani hat-trick
September 18, 2011

The starting line-ups

Hat-trick specialist Edinson Cavani bagged another as Napoli confirmed their title potential.
Walter Mazzarri played what his strongest XI – Andrea Dossena came in for Juan Zuniga from the side that drew with Manchester City.
Max Allegri has something of an injury crisis, summed up by an extremely inexperienced bench. Daniele Bonera played at left-back, and Antonio Cassano partnered Pato upfront.
Milan took the lead through a superb Alberto Aquilani header, but the pattern of the game was this: Milan get possession, run out of ideas in the final third, Napoli win the ball, break quickly, and score.

Formation match-up
Napoli’s 3-4-3ish shape generally produces interesting games against different formations, and it was fascinating to see it come up against a midfield diamond. At either end of the pitch, there were few major issues – Napoli had 3 v 2 at the back, Milan had 4 v 3. All was well there. The midfield battle, however, was much more interesting, where there was a contest between Milan’s carrileros, who started narrow and moved forward to provide extra runners from midfield, and the Napoli wing-backs.
In a way, the Napoli wing-backs were forced to do a similar job as they did in midweek at City – to come narrow, out of their natural positions on the flank. Still, they did have problems when the carrileros made forward runs into very central positions – Clarence Seedorf found space a couple of times on the edge of the box.
Napoli breaks
It was equally interesting when Napoli won the ball, because the Milan carrileros were never quite sure what to do. In a 4-3-1-2, the midfield diamond usually stays narrow and slides across the pitch. Yet because Napoli attacked so directly, there was rarely any lateral movement from the diamond – Seedorf and Antonio Nocerino simply had to sprint back, often into very deep, wide positions that meant Napoli lost their shape.
In addition, Mark van Bommel didn’t really know what to do with himself. He had no direct opponent to pick up, and without the ball he failed to stop Napoli’s breaks – most obviously when he was skinned by Walter Gargano for Cavani’s second. His distribution on the ball was also quite poor, with the full-backs not free.
Milan in possession
Those full-backs could have done more in the attacking phase, though – Bonera is too right-footed to play left-back and was inevitably replaced by Luca Antonini in the second half. They were obviously scared of the counter, but Milan should have been able to half-trust, half-risk their two centre-backs plus a holding midfield when they were chasing the game.
Napoli rarely looked to press Milan (with the exception of one brief instance at the start of the second half) – they were happy to soak up pressure, win the ball in their own third, and then break. They were very much a counter-attacking side last season, but seem an exaggerated version of themselves so far in 2011/12.
Milan were extremely poor in the final third. It was a surprise to see Cassano to the right and Pato to the left – the former likes to drift in from the left, the latter has sometimes been fielded as a right-sided forward – but that wasn’t their main problem. Their passing was too slow, their play was too narrow and too easy to break down. Aquilani’s header was superb but otherwise he was disappointing, and he probably isn’t at his best as a trequartista. He is much better technically than Kevin-Prince Boateng, but at least Boateng gives drive to their attacks.
There were plenty of late substitutions, but they didn’t change the pattern of the match as Napoli successfully killed the game. Urby Emanuelson came on for van Bommel with Seedorf going to the holding role, and Blerim Dzemaili came on for Hamsik, playing a little deeper and making Napoli a 3-5-2 without the ball. Formations didn’t matter so much by this stage – Napoli were putting men behind the ball and defending deep, and Milan never looked like having the creativity to break them down.
Conclusion
Mazzarri won the battle here – Napoli were excellent at breaking quickly, with the wing-backs and Gargano rapidly turning defence into attack, whilst the addition of Gokhan Inler has made them fiercer in the centre of the pitch, even if they may lack Michele Pazienza’s discipline later on in the season.
Milan’s defeat was extremely reminiscent of their loss to Cesena just over a year ago. Then, it seemed they wouldn’t be able to win the title with such a narrow formation and no drive from full-back, but they pulled it off – so no need to get carried away with this defeat.

Manchester United v Chelsea: Five things we learned

Nani no longer stands in Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow, Frank Lampard is fading fast and David de Gea is getting better

Daniel Taylor at Old Trafford
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 18 September 2011 18.57 BST

1 Manchester, the new Milan?
Manchester, Mark Radcliffe once said, is "a city that thinks a table is for dancing on" and, in football terms, it is difficult to see anyone else gatecrashing the party. Sir Alex Ferguson's message before this match was that Chelsea could not be discounted but there was little evidence to suggest André Villas‑Boas's team can sustain a genuine title challenge to the Manchester clubs. Chelsea looked bright in flashes. They moved the ball well and got behind United's defence but they also flirted with the idea of going down to the heaviest defeat of the Roman Abramovich era. The season is still in its infancy and nobody from Old Trafford would be presumptuous enough to write them off, but, for the team that beat Arsenal 8-2 in their last home match, this could conceivably have been another score more reminiscent of a 1950s match.

2 Nani is his own man
At Old Trafford they still find it perplexing that Nani did not even make it on to the short list for last season's player-of-the-year awards – and the sense of grievance is fully justified. Nani has not always been the crowd's favourite, but since he developed into a serious footballer it is difficult to think of too many wide players around the football world who possess a greater penetrative edge. Nani complained recently that whenever he is interviewed he is always asked about whether he feels he is still living in the shadow of Ronaldo. The truth is he has become a formidable player in his own right. Here's a statistic: Nani versus Ronaldo, goals and assists over their first 100 league matches for United – 52 versus 31.

3 Will the old Torres return?
The thing about Fernando Torres is that everyone seems to think it is only a matter of time before the old player comes back, the devastating striker who gave the impression he could score from any angle and once came to Old Trafford and subjected Nemanja Vidic to one of the worst ordeals he has suffered in United's colours. Torres, to give him his due, reminded us that he can distinguish between the frame of a goal and the door of a barn and when he clipped his shot over David de Gea early in the second half it was in a manner totally out of keeping with someone who had scored just once in his previous 23 matches for Chelsea. But then we come to the open‑goal miss later in the second half. Or the pig's ear he made of that chance in the first half when Anderson gave him the ball just outside the penalty area. His performance was a wild graph of what is good and bad and, sadly for him, that horrible late howler in front of the Stretford End will probably be remembered more than the expertly taken goal.

4 Lampard is fading fast
At half-time it was clear that Chelsea needed to change something and the decision by Villas-Boas was bold. Frank Lampard had struggled through the opening 45 minutes, like a boxer after one too many fights. He is 33 now, the years are catching up and there are increasing signs of a player on the wane. Perhaps he needs to reinvent himself. This is still a footballer with many qualities but, in terms of energy and drive, Ramires had a more telling impact for Chelsea in midfield. And the worst part for Lampard? This is beginning to feel like the norm rather than the exception. Maybe now is the time he should consider taking a more deep-lying role, just as Roy Keane and Paul Scholes once changed their roles for United. The cold, harsh reality is, that nobody could particularly argue with the decision of Lampard's manager.

5 De Gea winning them over
There were a couple of loose moments. The Manchester United goalkeeper flapped at a cross and, at one point, Chelsea's supporters could be heard comparing him unfavourably with Heurelho Gomes, now third-choice goalkeeper at Spurs. But De Gea's self‑belief is growing and, likewise, the crowd are getting more confidence in him. He also enjoyed a bit of luck because while the point‑blank save from Ramires earned him a congratulatory hug from Anderson, the Chelsea man will wince when he sees the replays of how he and his team-mate Daniel Sturridge got in each other's way. De Gea has endured an erratic start but, slowly but surely, he is coming through the scrutiny.

Photograph: Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images
