Dortmund fall under spell of prodigy Götze

Captain of Germany's UEFA European Under-17 Championship-winning team in 2009, Götze has enjoyed a rapid rise since and it has only accelerated this term. The attacking midfielder made five league appearances in Dortmund's 2009/10 campaign, none of them lasting more than 16 minutes, but this season has started four of his seven Bundesliga outings and made four more appearances in the UEFA Europa League and German Cup.
Götze, whose family moved to Dortmund from Bavaria when he was six, has twice collected the prestigious Fritz Walter medal, the German Football Association's (DFB) award for the most promising young player. Not only does the player have to perform outstandingly on the pitch, but he also has to show flawless behaviour off it. Neither is a problem for Götze, who professes neither to drink nor smoke and is said to be very much down to earth.
The 1.71m youngster is noted for his remarkable composure on the ball. He is able to play the killer pass yet also brings a genuine goal threat, and, with a left foot just as strong as his right, has a versatility that allows him to play in several attacking midfield positions.
Dortmund have moved to tie him to a contract until summer 2014 and, in a bid to shield him from the mounting media attention, have forbidden Götze – who still lives at home – from giving any interviews for the time being. His older brother, Fabian, 20, was also at Dortmund but moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 last season, where he plays for the B team.

Götze scored twice in a dramatic encounter to help Dortmund secure a late victory in their opening Group J game. After a perfect one-two with Lucas Barrios, Götze gave his side a 2-0 lead, only to watch them surrender their advantage and fall 3-2 behind with 12 minutes to go. Barrios levelled with three minutes remaining, however, before playing a perfect through ball to Götze two minutes into stoppage time. The teenager held his nerve and, with a coolness beyond his years, sealed Dortmund's win.

"I have been living in Dortmund for 12 years. I feel well at home here, I get along nicely with my team-mates and the playing time is OK as well. I was delighted [at how good things are going] – and very much surprised."

Dortmund stormed clear of the chasers after a run of 14 wins in 15 matches

The first half of the Bundesliga season has been perhaps the most surprising in the competition's 47-year history.
While it is not unusual for one or two teams to upset the odds or disappoint, for pretty much everyone to either outperform expectations or fall well short is extraordinary. None more so than Borussia Dortmund, who go into the winter break ten points clear.
Dortmund were braced for a year of transition, having made the decision to rely heavily on youthful talent – theirs is the youngest starting XI in the league. They lost their first and last games of their opening 17, but in between they managed 14 wins and a draw while studiously avoiding any title talk.
Mario Götze, 18, and 22-year-old trio Kevin Grosskreutz, Mats Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer all made senior Germany debuts in 2010 and the only place where a lack of experience perhaps told was in the UEFA Europa League, where they fell in the group stage. "Overall we have had a very successful and educational first half of the season," said midfielder Nuri Şahin.

Neymar’s four goals allowed Brazil to debut tonight with a 4-1 victory in the South American U-20 over Paraguay, which could do little against the magic of the new star of Brazilian football.

Neymar confirmed that the praises that precede him and the greed he generates among the biggest teams in the world are not exaggerated, when he presented himself in Group B of the tournament with a penalty kick, a purely technical goal, another goal full of opportunism and another that was a real act of magic.

Locked beginning and no football

The match played at "Jorge Basadre" stadium of the city of Tacna was initially tangled, with few risk measures, beyond Neymar’s announcement after 6 minutes of play, that he was beginning to charge batteries with a precise center that hit the crossbar.

Paraguay ratified, however, that claw is a attribute it has and sought to go forward in minute 11, when Benitez sent a free-kick that tested the reflexes of goalkeeper Gabriel. It was in those minutes that the 'Guarani' team dared to press on with the swift raids by Correa, always enabled properly by Torres, and the deployment to keep the mark on Neymar.

But in minute 24, Casimir entered the Paraguayan area fast and goalkeeper Ovando committed a penalty, which a minute later was collected by Neymar, who sent in a low shot that displaced Ovando completely.

The new Brazilian star reappeared in minute 33 to show that his effectiveness as a striker is one with his talent with the ball, receiving a pass from the left, evading two bewildered opponents with a deft movement and shooting low and to the goal post for the 2-0.

In the second half, and after starring in other  risk plays, Neymar changed to the right to continue causing havoc, but the expulsion of  his partner Zé Eduardo for a double yellow card place his team off balance. Two minutes later, defender Viera scored for Paraguay with a shot at half height after a corner kick.

But the Neymar’s spectacle  only had an intermission, because the attacker reappeared in minute 60 to fight for a ball with goalkeeper Ovando and score the third with a header.

Three minutes later, however, he made a move that called for turning off the lights and going home. He received the ball alone, watched as the goalkeeper came out and left him completely out of options with a high, soft shot that allowed the ball to fall like a leaf driven by the wind into the Paraguayan goal.

From then on, Brazil had other options, but it was Paraguay that struggled to discount the win, which it got in minute 83, with a goal by Brian Montenegro for the final 4-2.

Argentina won their second successive game in the 2011 South American Youth Championships as they edged past hosts Peru 2-1.

River Plate centre-forward Rogelio Funes Mori gave the Argentines the lead as early as the second minute but Alexander Callens equalised for Peru midway through the second half.

However, with just four minutes of normal time remaining Bruno Zuculini popped up with the winner.

Argentina now lead Group A with six points from two games while Peru are at the bottom, having suffered defeats in both their fixtures.

Venezuela 1-1 Uruguay

In what proved to be an entertaining encounter Jose Miguel Reyes put Venezuela in the lead in the 19th minute.

But Federico Martin Rodriguez Rodriguez restored parity for Uruguay just two minutes before the hour-mark. The two sides have a point each.

Porto are on the cusp of signing attacking starlet Juan Manuel Iturbe. The Portuguese giants are set to snap up the player with the ominous tag of being nicknamed 'the new Lionel Messi.'

The 17-year-old is currently representing Argentina at the Under-20 South American championships. It is reported that the transfer will cost Porto €1.5 million, with €1m going to Cerro Porteno and the rest to the player's agent and his father.

"Iturbe's family arrived [on Tuesday] in Portugal in the company of agent Gustavo Mascardi, to negotiate with FC Porto. Cerro Porteno waited for an agreement to be reached, to travel to Portugal too and close the transfer. This Wednesday we received word that the deal could be completed," Cerro Porteno spokesman Romeo Ortigoza told Maisfutebol.

"For the moment the family has reached an understanding with FC Porto, we would reach a compromise too. On our part there is no problem."

The player has been training with Argentine outfit Quilmes since August, but unable to play after a dispute from the Paraguayan side that they still owned the player's rights.

He only turns 19 next week, but the scouts from the big European clubs have Neymar da Silva Santos in their sights once more after a four-goal salvo for Brazil at the South American U-20 Championship 2011 in Peru.

Neymar has clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United in a lather after his quadruple saw off Paraguay with a 4-2 scoreline and a clutch of agents are touting for business with at least four Italian sides also reportedly chasing after his signature. Chelsea were first out of the blocks in the summer, making an initial bid of €35m but Neymar elected to stay put for now in the belief it is too early to make the move to Europe.

The nimble forward-cum-winger currently plays for Santos, who know a little about breeding star names having produced not just Robinho but a certain Pele. The legendary Pele may have won a FIFA World Cup™ winner's medal when even younger than Neymar but the latter has a precocious array of skills and Santos have a battle on their hands if he is to see out his contract through to 2015.

Many in Brazil consider the teen with the "Mohican" style haircut as a huge star in the making - even if he himself eschews comparisons with Pele - further comparisons have been made with late 1950s and early 1960s wideman Garrincha, Brazil's 'Anjo de Pernas Tortas' (Angel with Bent Legs). Neymar was keen to play down his widely acclaimed individual brilliance after the win over Paraguay, saying Monday: "Brazil can score goals. We played very well against an excellent Paraguayan side. I am very happy."

But it has not always been sweetness and light for the teen. Last year, Santos fined him for insulting both players and officials at Santos, including his skipper Edu Dracena. Even so, his influence is growing as coach Dorival Junior was sacked just days after refusing to bow to demands at boardroom level to start him in a match against Corinthians.

His temperamental nature has to date acted as a brake on his progression to the full squad under new coach Mano Menezes, who left him off the squad which travelled to Europe for October friendlies even after he had been called up for an August friendly against USA - he scored in a 2-0 victory.

But it is unlikely he will stay outside the full international side's orbit for much longer. He will not feature in a 9 February friendly against France at Stade de France, but that is primarily because the Under-20 side will need his goalscoring exploits through - they hope - to a 12 February final. Any recall by Menezes will mean the youngster first has to show Monday's salvo was no fluke and go on to impress in remaining group games against Columbia, Bolivia and Ecuador.

Neymar, the striker, reappeared to wind a new victory for Brazil, this time 1-3 over Colombia in a Group B match of the South American U-20 that despite the outcome, was a  very difficult match for the 'canarinhá - leader in its group with six units.

The meeting, which closed the second day of the series which takes place in the Peruvian city of Tacna, was sealed with the forcefulness of the Santos striker, who in minute 86 has proved once again the quality of his boots. The Brazilians did not show this time the superiority of their first encounter, when they thrashed Paraguay by 4-2. Colombia showed a great display to curb Neymar, who did very little, beyond his annotation.

Colombia came to challenge Brazil, trying to bring the game to their ground, with the ball along the turf and a disciplined and scaled mark against the rival attackers. Although Colombian player Calle tried goalkeeper Gabriel in minute 14, five minutes after, Lucas also warned with a powerful shot that was blocked by Mosquera dramatically.

Cardona, who along with skillful Castillo was among the highlights of Colombia, launched a free kick in minute 22 that surprised everyone by hitting the Brazil crossbar. The pace of play continued for the remaining minutes with a solid defense by Colombia and a showy Brazil, when the ball went through the feet of Luke, but he looked little at Neymar to try to break the rival wall.

Already in the second half, the Brazilians pressed the accelerator and William crashed a ball on a post in minute 48, after a great play when Neymar left four opponents on the road. The offensive pressure paid her off after 54 minutes when Casemiro added with a header a center from the right sent by Diego Mauricio.

In minute 63, it was William who increased the figures when he rose to touch the ball at will after Lucas stole the ball from a Colombian defender. However, the next minute Castillo entered the Brazilian are from the left and was knocked down. Lukaku, 17, has been playing first team football for Anderlecht since he was 16-years-old and is already a regular for Belgium at international level.
Almost every major club in Europe, including all of England's big clubs, have been tracking the striker, who has scored 13 goals in 20 games this season.
Christophe Henrotay, Lukaku's agent, told Belgian Sport magazine: "I have very good contacts with Manchester City, but they are only one of the clubs to ask about him. There is no concrete offer or agreement.
"City did ask me to be keep informed, if other clubs insisted on him," Henrotay continued. "If someone leaves Manchester City, it is not impossible things could be accelerated - but you have seen the attackers there, but there is also the other clubs who are interested."

Argentina 1-1 Venezuela

Argentina failed to maintain their 100 per cent record in the 2011 South American Youth Championships as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela.

Sergio Araujo broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half for Argentina, but midway through the half Yohandry Orozco equalised.

The result means that Argentina remain in pole position in Group A with seven points from three matches; Venezuela are fifth with just two points.

Chile 0-4 Uruguay

Uruguay romped to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Chile to revive their chances of qualification for the next round of the competition.

Pablo Ceppelini put the Uruguayans ahead as early as the 10th minute and added his second a minute from half-time.

Adrian Nicolas Luna and Diego Fabian Polenta then found the Chile goal in the second session.

Uruguay rise to second in the group with four points, while Chile are third with three.

Brazil's Domination

Brazil proved once again that they are the kings of the continent when it comes to the South American Championship. They took some time to find their feet in the competition, but their form in the hexagonal stage was very impressive, with four consecutive victories, before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay once they had already claimed the title. Their tenth South American Championship demonstrated that they are a level above the other nine nations of the continent.

Argentina's Elimination

World Champions Argentina came into the tournament as the clear favourites, but they struggled a great deal in the competition, and missed out on a place in the World Cup for the first time in 16 years (they missed the competition in 1993 due to disciplinary reasons). What is most surprising is that Argentina have won five of the past seven editions of the World Cup. But Sergio Batista's side couldn't find their form, and even if they still had an outside chance of qualifying coming into the final round, they were beaten by a much more solid Colombia side.

What does this say about Argentina's future? Despite such a disappointing campaign, some Argentine players actually managed to shine. But much work needs to be done because this crop of players have plenty more to offer.

Venezuela Make History

Venezuela were without doubt the revelations of the tournament. They qualified for their first World Cup, with a convincing 3-1 victory over Uruguay. In the last few years Venezuelan football has grown immensely, and their youth squad demonstrated that their future is brighter than ever. Although the hosts struggled in some games, they came to life when it mattered most. Venezuela will be hoping to make an impact in their first ever World Cup appearance in September.

Paraguay, Uruguay Impress

Both Paraguay and Uruguay will participate in the World Cup after impressing throughout the tournament. Uruguay won all four matches of the first round, including a 3-2 victory over Brazil. But although they secured qualification with still one match to play in the hexagonal round, they couldn't win any of their last two matches.

Paraguay, who drew 2-2 with Uruguay in the penultimate match of the hexagonal round, came to life towards the end of the competition. They needed the three points against Brazil in their final encounter, and managed to achieve this after a solid display in defense.

Standout Players

European clubs should be on the lookout, because the quality on display in the competition was world-class. Brazil were not only strong as a team, but individually they were also very impressive. Star striker Walter is destined for superstar status, as are Douglas Costa, Maylson, Sandro and Giuliano. In truth the entire Brazil squad has the potential to succeed in Europe.

Uruguay were very exciting throughout the tournament. Attackers Santiago Garcia, Abel Hernandez, and Nicolas Lodeiro particularly stood out. But foreign based players, Jonathan Urretaviscaya (Benfica) and Tabare Viudez (AC Milan) were also a handful for opposing defenders.

As is usually the case with Paraguay, their success was done to team work and sacrifice. But players like Ronald Huth, Aldo Paniagua, Santander Ospina and Robin Ramirez did very well.

Venezuela's best player was without doubt goalkeeper Rafael Romo. While defender Jose Velasquez was also key to their success.

Argentina left a lot to be desired, and few of their players performed to a high left. Their most important player was Eduardo Salvio, but he couldn't do it all on his own.

Brazil, with an alternate team, today beat Ecuador 1-0 and took the top spot in Group B, qualifying for the final phase of the South American U-20 tournament in Peru. The Brazilians ended their participation in the series played in the Peruvian cities of Tacna and Moquegua with a victory that was sealed with a goal by Henry, in minute 23.

Ecuador resorted to collective impetus and the speed of its attackers to try to stop a Brazil that was very strong up the middle sector, but also suffered when pressed by the attacks, mainly from Ecuadorian Montaño. Even the first scoring chance was for those run by Sixto Vizuete, when Ibarra, in minute 13, defeated the Brazilian defenders and sent a shot that was deflected to a corner kick by goalkeeper Alexander.

After that, the match went into much fought actions, concentrating in the midfield, which showcased the talents of Brazil’s Patrick Alan  and the large deployment of Ecuador. But in minute 23, Henrique moved at speed up the middle after a play in four passes and received a heel shot from Alan Patrick that allowed him to overcome goalkeeper Jaramillo with a low shot.

Ecuador received another hard blow in minute 28, when Juan Cazares, one of their best players, was ejected after a hard foul against a rival. With Alan Patrick as the owner of the midfield, the Brazilians set out to control the ball and create risk plays, that were always wasted, however. Ecuador had two clear chances to match the account when Montano sent a high shot that hit the crossbar in minute 75 and in minute 77, he lost the angle of his shot and it went too high after leaving behind being goalkeeper Aleksander.

The result has enabled Brazil to win Group B with 10 points, and qualify for the final tournament to be held next Monday in Arequipa. Ecuador, meanwhile, has four points and, in the final game of the series, next Friday, it will define its luck against Bolivia
