Ivan Cordoba fan chat on Inter Channel
Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:56:01
APPIANO GENTILE - Ivan Cordoba was the special guest for this week's fan chat on Inter Channel. Among other things the Colombian defender, at Inter since 1999, talked about his long career with the Nerazzurri, the team's start to the season, and Sunday's big game against Juventus.
Cordoba, now you have reached the milestone of three hundred games in Serie A, is 500 appearances in all competitions for Inter your next aim?
"Yes, let's hope so. Although these are few compared to those made by my friend Javier Zanetti. So many games, but it's the right number after so many years at Inter."
In the history of Inter there are few players who can claim to have won as much as you?
"It's true. I arrived at a difficult time, but we have been patient and we have continued to work well. The good times have finally arrived."
Angelo, who sent us many messages for you, asks us how always manage to be so humble and understand the coach's technical decisions.
"I think that experience is very important in this. Just like seeing team-mates who weren't always playing but they kept working and never complained, and were always ready to play when it was their turn. Also, the feeling of being part of a good team helps you have the patience that you always need to have. You can work with calm and tranquillity, but when your chance comes you have to show that you are ready. You must never complain because ours is a fine trade. Sometimes you don't play much, but we come here to train every day and have fun, and this makes us feel good."
Andrea from Milan asks: you and Benitez speak the same language, Spanish. Does this help? And do you agree that the team is improving?
"Yes, the team is improving and I think that we all know it. It takes a little time when a new coach arrives, so speaking Spanish helps to a certain extent. But Benitez came here well prepared. He speaks very good Italian and he only asks the odd word now and then. In general he has no problems with the language. In any event, as we all hope, I think the best Inter is yet to come. It's useless to think that there can be a tremendous difference after a few months working with the new coach. Inter are now occupying spaces better? It's the result of the work we have been doing in the weeks since Benitez arrived. We try to move all the time and give our colleagues the chance to play the ball, quickly if possible."
Marcella from Sassari asks us what is your best memory of the past ten years at Inter. And the worst one.
"There are so many good times, and many less good ones too. But I think the good ones have cancelled out the bad ones. Of course, the fifth of May (2002) was a tremendous disappointment, but everything we have won since then has erased all the bad memories."
As a symbol of that bad period, we could mention that penalty given against you for a hand ball in a game against Perugia, when the ball actually hit your thigh...
"If we go and look at all the details... I was very angry that day. I remember another situation in Udine when I was trying to protect Toldo and Sosa was behind me. He fell over and the referee gave a penalty against Inter in the last minute. So many things happened."
Andrea from Milan asks: in your first years at Inter you played on the right and left wings. Why have you always said you prefer playing in central defence? And is there any Colombian player that you'd recommend to Inter?
"I have played in every position in defence. I played as striker when I was little, I was a fast right-winger who would often leave the ball behind him... I didn't score much so they moved me further and further back until I tried out the central defender role, and I have always been comfortable playing there. There are so many young players in Colombia, the only problem is that they try to leave their teams too quickly, when they are still not mature enough. They should stay at their respective teams to gain more experience. We had this problem with the national team: there are many young players who left early and have little experience. A player I really like John Moreno, who doesn't play in Colombia now, but at Racing in Argentina. He's a great talent, a playmaker-striker with a good physique. He's very strong but he still has to grow physically. I also like Ibarbo, a tackling midfielder who plays for Nacional de Medellin. He's a bit like Vieira."
Has there ever been a time when you wanted to leave Inter?
"Yes, and I think that people know about it. It was a bit of a hard time for me, I really wanted to play because I was feeling good. I had the chance to go to Manchester City last season, but I agreed with the club and the coach to keep giving a hand to this team. So I continued here and I am proud to have done it. I thank those who helped me take the best decision. Not being at Inter after everything we won last season would have been a shame."
It's not easy for a player who has always been a starter to become the first alternative in your role...
"It's very difficult because a lot of things go through your mind. The days go by and you just have to keep working and doing well. Then the time comes when you accept the decision and you realise that you are still part of a great group."
How important is the charity work done by Inter in making you feel an integral part of the club? What do you think of Francesco Toldo's role at Inter Campus?
"Inter Campus, and all the good things that Inter do in the community make this club even more prestigious. It is important and it makes a difference, because it comes from the heart and it's non-profit. I think Toldo is the perfect person for what he is doing with Inter Campus and all these children. He's a clean person, a great professional and a great example."
Inter Channel helps children in Colombia by promoting a charity project run by Ivan Cordoba...
"Yes, by sending a simple text message a child can be vaccinated on a hospital boat that can reach areas in Colombia that are only reachable by river. The doctors will arrive in these areas for the first time."
Alessio asks what you will do when you stop playing football one day.
"I don't think I will return to Colombia straight away. I will try to do something related to football. I like the idea of studying to be ready for what comes after. I'd like to stay here in Milan because my family is happy here, so I will stay here as long as they want to."
Are there any special techniques or tricks that you use to jump so high? Al the Werder players were very tall but you always beat them in the air...
"When they showed us their formation they were all very tall. They weren't shorter than one metre eighty-five. Ever since I started playing I have always marked tall people. I remember my second game with the national team in Oslo when I had to mark Tore André Flo. This was my first big test."
Have you felt a similar joy to the one you felt when you scored the winning goal for Colombia in the Copa America final?
"Yes, when I scored that goal in Reggio Calabria and the referee blew for full time after the goal. We were losing 2-0 and we won 3-2. With that goal we had erased all the polemics of the past week. I celebrated that goal with great strength because it was good for the team. My best goal? The one against Napoli at San Siro, scored with the leg that I had an operation on."
What kind of match will Inter-Juventus be?
"It's a different game from all the others. It's the derby of Italy, a special match. And derbies are played in a special way."
But it is still the derby of Italy even if they went down to Serie B?
"I think this is a handicap, but for them."
我要感谢那些帮我做出这个最佳决定的人(Who?Who?Who?Who??? )。
