The Ball
The Tango ball was used. Its design brought about a radical change in comparison with the previous models. Its patterns are more dynamic and convey a sense of continuity through its layers.
The Star

His physical potential and the precision of his left leg were pivotal factors for taking the World Cup to Argentina抯 glass cabinet for the first time. Mario Alberto Kempes popped up with his vigor and shooting capacity in crucial moments. In this way, he scored two key goals in the final match against the Netherlands. He was called 揟he Killer?for his finishing ability in the goal area. He scored 115 goals for the Argentine team in 149 matches and he was the top scorer in the Spanish league for two successive years, in 1977 and 1978, playing for Valencia.
The Number

This was the grade given to the tournament’s organization by Joao Hevelange, FIFA’s President at that time.
The Team

After 48 years, Argentina’s dream of conquering the World Cup came true. With a squad full of individualities, it gathered all the necessary requirements to win the title: a good deal of luck – let’s consider Resenbrink’s shot in the goalpost in the final match-, personality to tackle with defeat in the first phase match against Italy, scoring capacity with the explosion of the “killer” Kempes, a clear tactical idea which begun in the substitution bench and an optimal physical training. All these factors were very important to overcome in the final match the efficient Dutch team, who was looking for revenge. Unfortunately, this sport achievement had a bittersweet taste due to the political situation our country was going through during those years of illegal repression. But the national team, who knew little or nothing about political manipulations, committed itself to play and wrote one of the most glorious pages in our football history.

All questions have an answer
Menotti’s confession obtained after the match against Italy. The monologue of a tired man. An unexpected and anxious reaction which explains all the uncertainties and reveals a deep confidence in his players and in the style ruled by his philosophy.
Don’t you think, Mr. Menotti, that there were mistakes at the back in Italy’s goal?
So? Are these or aren’t they? I knew it, of course, I have already achieved so much experience in this business that I can guess what questions I will be asked. And I have an answer for everything. I don’t need time to think about them because they are too simple. There are no doubts for someone who coaches a team. Apart from the individual virtues and mistakes, nothing can be confusing. Surely, I won’t be able to explain to you why a player dribbles four players before he scores or why a player plays in the middle when he was expressly told to play an open wide position. In the end, the player is the one who decides how to solve a situation. But I am not worried about the rest…
Do you want answers? I’ll give them to you, all the answers you need…
Look, what I said about Kempes is true, but when it comes to making up a team I realize that, being Luque absent, Kempes is the right man to occupy this position against Italy. Is it clear? Let’s see if we understand each other for once and for all. The fact that Menotti says that a certain player is better for a certain position than another player, doesn’t mean that he can’t play if we need him in that position. Kempes has the strength, a good touch, power, shooting. Why wouldn’t he be able to play the nine-man? I’m no fool, I know that the best thing would be to put him at the back so that he organises the play. But against Italy, it was necessary that he played the nine-man in order to get the sweeper and the stopper to mark him and lead them to the ends. The only reason why he could be criticized is because he stood still on the second half, and this is because he’s not used to playing in such a reduced space and with two men over him. But during the first half he did his job. If he had managed to net a couple of scoring chances he had, we could have easily won the match because Italy would have to go out and not wait, since it is the most convenient thing to do.
I took René out because he had not yet recovered physically and, being the qualification a fact, it was a good chance for Bertoni to play the complete match and also for the “Negro” (black) Ortiz to enter the field. The idea was to play a wide game in order to leave the markers out of the area, put the two defenders together and try to enter through the gaps. But Italy is a team used to marking and waiting. The wingers and forwarders act as defenders.
Their relay is good, when you pass the marker you immediately have the winger on that side. Bettega had to follow Passarella when he attacked or went up to head in the corners. What happened with Tarantini was a play we had rehearsed a lot. It was not repeatedly done because it caused problems. The Italians didn’t know who had to mark him. We couldn’t take advantage of the confusion. After the own goal we went crazy, we started to close the attacking front and tried to enter from above, throwing centres. Olguín played very well and proved that it was not his individual failure, the problem was simply that Ardiles was not well stood in the field. This time, with Ardiles situated a few metres behind to the right, he had no problems. How many times did Bettega run over him? Never.
At the back there were two mistakes, but none of them had to do with the goal. Olguín and Luis Galván played at the level the should always play. Is a well done wall that ends in goal, a serious mistake of the defence? The merit has to be awarded to two great players who are Bettega and Paolo Rossi, but it was the only time they reached clearly. If we had managed to mark the difference there was in the game by scoring two or three goals, who would have said that their goal was our mistake? That is why I insist on the fact that this time the problems took place above. We could not even create half of the scoring chances that this team is capable of producing.
I defend Valencia as I defended Ardiles or Luque, no only because I am convinced of his conditions but also because I can show anybody that the best Argentinean scoring chances were created by Valencia. He moves in a fast way which is essential to play against teams that tend to wait…
