After suffering defeat at the hands of Valencia on Saturday, Diego Simeone will be trying to get Atlético back on the winning trail in Thursday’s Europa League visit to Académica.

The Rojiblancos need just a point to ensure qualification to the knockout stages, but will want to keep up their excellent continental run that currently stands at 16 consecutive wins.

Kick-off in Coimbra is at the earlier time of 19:00 CET.

Joint-top of La Liga, 13 victories in succession and a 23-match unbeaten run was the pedigree Atleti brought into the Mestalla last weekend, but saw their best run of all-time come to an abrupt end with a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

However, spirit in the camp is still positive, and as ‘Cholo’ made clear recently, one poor result will not be enough to put a stop to his team’s excellent form this season.

Having made the short trip across the border to Portugal, los Colchoneros are now focused on beginning what they hope will be another impenetrable run, with the Argentine tactician again opting to ring the changes and keep his squad on their toes.

Staying in Madrid this week are Arda Turan, Diego Godín, Miranda, Juanfran, Gabi, Cristian Rodríguez and star man Radamel Falcao, who may still be feeling the affects of a head injury sustained in Saturday’s game.

Brazilian forward Diego Costa, a goalscorer in our 2-1 win in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago, is also unavailable because of injury, so it is likely that we’ll see either Adrián or even Raúl García in the forward position.

Another option up top could be B-team striker Pedro Martín, who is one of five canteranos who made the travelling party. Saúl Ñíguez, who scored twice at the weekend, Kader Oueslati, Momar Ndoye and Javier Manquillo are also in contention.

Third choice ‘keeper Joel Robles is of course unregistered for UEFA competition and cannot play, with the same going to Óliver Torres, who came on as a substitute against Jaén last week.

Some would deem it a slight risk from Simeone not to call on our big names in a game that we could do with winning, but as reported by Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday, Académica are likely to be weakened by an injury crisis that has left 9 players sidelined.

Cholo also took the opportunity to defend his decision when speaking before this evening’s training session, giving a vote of confidence to some of the fringe players and youngsters.

“We have come to win,” he stressed. “There are guys in the cantera who are working very well and are close to the first team. They know our dynamics and I hope to give them minutes.”

“Académica are a strong team and we expect a tough game. They play a very direct style and showed in the last fifteen minutes of the game at the Calderón their danger. We are prepared.”

On the subject of who will play in attack, the 42 year-old didn’t give too much away, suggesting it may not be Adrián who gets the nod.

“Adrián can play in a variety of positions, but he is not a goalscorer,” he said. “Hopefully soon he’ll begin adding more goals, as he is happy and getting better each day.”

As mentioned above, the hosts come into the game with a number of absentees, and with just one point in the Europa League so far and a trip to champions Porto coming up at the weekend, may not be at full strength on Thursday either.

Despite winning the Portuguese cup last term, defeat at home to newly promoted Estoril on Sunday has cranked up the pressure on manager Pedro Emanuel, who’s side have won just one of 8 league games so far.

“We know Atlético won’t relax, they are very close to qualification so we don’t expect them to facilitate us,” he said earlier in the week. ”They are a team of high quality and will be competitive, even when using different faces to those in the league.”

After the game, Atleti will return to Madrid and begin preparation for Sunday’s visit of Getafe, where we we’ll be looking to get our domestic campaign back to winning ways.

Filipe Luis: "We must end the league at the top and fighting for everything"

Filipe Luis spoke to the media at the conclusion of the event to support the fight against breast cancer in the press room of the Majadahonda Sports City. The Atletico full back spoke about the last game, "It was very nice and very hard. We didn’t pick up any points after a long time without losing a game. It was hard to lose but Valencia had to sweat a lot for their victory. We will continue our line, as we have done so far, trying to win and move up. Clearly, the season has been very good so far and this defeat served as a lesson and we’ll keep working."

On that defeat at Mestalla, he said "Valencia got a goal, there was no mistake on our part, we had two good penalties turned down, but no excuse. That can happen in any field you go to, but not only to us, to all teams. We lost that game because of many factors but it was not a comfortable game for Valencia."

This squad has made history by completing the longest unbeaten streak of Atletico Madrid in their history. Luis Filipe says that "this will happen more often because we will not win every game until the end of the season. The important thing is to see how we lost. It was against Valencia and they deserved the victory but there were many factors in it. We must end the league at the top and fighting for everything, this squad has the quality to do big things"

Personally, Filipe Luis is having a great season. The Atletico star said "At this club we had some very complicated times but it is clear that the team always helps a player improve. I grew up with the team. While the team was intermittent and irregular I was okay. I have my feet on the ground, a lot of ambition and I want to achieve a lot still. Above all, I have wanted to return to the national side, I work every day with a lot of humility to get there again."

Diego Pablo Simeone called up 18 players to travel to Coimbra
  
The expedition will leave on Wednesday morning with five youth players Saul, Pedro, Kader, Ndoye and Manquillo


Diego Pablo Simeone named the squad for the match against Academica Coimbra next Thursday at the end of training on Tuesday at the Sports City. Among the new features is the presence of five homegrown players in the squad: Saul, Pedro, Kader, Manquillo and Ndoye, who have been traveling with the first team and also in some cases have made their debut in a competitive match. In all, Saul has played in all three previous matches of the Europa League.

Godin, Falcao, Arda Turan, Cristian Rodriguez, Gabi, Juanfran, Miranda, Diego Costa and Joel remain in Madrid. The team will leave by plane on Wednesday at 11:00 am and will return at the conclusion of the match. On Tuesday, the staff held a closed-door training in field 1 of the Sports City in which Diego Costa worked with Oscar Pitillas, while the keepers were working specifically with Pablo Vercellone and Oscar Ortega and Carlos Menendez.

The Brazilian completes 100 games for the club & Juanfran 50 league games


  
On Saturday at the Mestalla two players reached big milestones. Luis Filipe played his 100th for the club in his third season. Meanwhile, Juanfran completed 50 wearing the red and white in the league on Saturday, unfortunately they couldn’t celebrate with a win, as they would have liked.

Filipe Luis came to Atletico Madrid after winning the first Europa League, although he could not play in the final in Monaco in the second consecutive title, the UEFA Super Cup. That first season he ended up playing 36 games and in 2011-12 a total of 53 games and indisputable part of the team that won the second double in Europe. This season has played 11 games.

Juanfran also came in the 10-11 season to Atletico Madrid. He arrived in January to play the Copa del Rey tie against Real Madrid and played a total of 15 league games that season. Last season at right back, with Diego Pablo Simeone he played 26 league games and excellent physical and technical qualities made him a regular ashe also made his debut with the Spanish national team. This season he has played nine league games.

Atlético Madrid’s historic streak of 16 consecutive victories in European competition came to an end as we suffered defeat at the hands of Académica de Coimbra.

Like against Valencia on the weekend, Atleti again lost 2-0 in a game with few opportunities for either side.

In the entire game we weren’t able to create any clear cut chances, while the Portuguese mid-table side scored from their first opportunity of the match.

In the 29th minute Académica took the lead when Wilson Eduardo anticipated an incoming cross faster than the lethargic Sílvio.

It wasn’t the only time an Atlético defender was caught napping, as Cata Díaz and Sergio Asenjo also occasionally lost concentration.

There was little Atlético offered offensively in the first half. The single moment of excitement came after Adrían’s clever backheel opened up a shot for Raúl García, but the midfielder’s attempt was blocked.

Directly after the break, Koke nearly beat Ricardo with a long-range strike, but the goalkeeper managed to get a hand to it. A few minutes later Raúl García wasn’t able to keep his volley down after he controlled a poorly cleared corner for the Rojiblancos.

Emre provided a spark shooting wide just seconds after replacing the injured Mario Suárez, while Raúl García also only missed the target by an inch. All of Atlético’s attempts came from outside the box, as Académica did well to shut out the creativity-lacking Spanish side.

The Cantera-stacked runners-up of La Liga (B-teamers Saúl, Pedro and Kader all got a run out) seemed to be closing in on an equaliser, but our hopes of taking a point from Coimbra were demolished when Jorge Pulido conceded a penalty. The centre back completely missed the ball with his challenge and instead brought down Salim Cissé, enabling Wilson Eduardo to score his second goal of the night, this time from the spot.

Simeone: "The team did not get to in to the match as expected"

Diego Pablo Simeone was loud and clear and didn’t hide in the press conference after the defeat against Academica Coimbra. "Academica played better. It was close, they moved the ball well and could we not get into their defense, except with the chance that Raul Garcia had in the first half. We did not play the game that we wanted to play well and Academica win", praised the Atletico coach.

His team dominated possession but that fact that they couldn’t overcome their opponent. "They controlled the ball in the first half but had no depth. We had moments of intensity but we were not playing the game. In the second half we started well the first twenty minutes and we could have got back in to the game. Academia are a good team, they played a good game, took advantage of the situations and won well," he said.
   
After the meeting at the City of Coimbra, Atletico are still at the top of Group B of the UEFA Europa League and continues to have it all in their hands. "We have to win the game that we’ve got," he said bluntly.

Jorge Resurrection, Koke, and Saul Ñíguez, the Atletico players who appeared before the media in the mixed zone, commented that there was no need to worry about the result and they have to keep fighting to get to the next phase, in which the Athletic Madrid still has everything in their own hands ahead of the next game in the Calderon on November 22nd against Israeli side Hapoel.

For Koke, the game against Academica was decided by small margins. "They have gone out to play a game like us and from two moves have scored two goals," assessed the Spaniard before stating they are already thinking about the next game. "We came to win as always. We will now forget about it, we will look at what we did wrong and go for the win on Sunday," he added.

If anything was clear about the changing room is that this defeat will not stop them. "This game makes you work with more enthusiasm and desire to win again. The coach has given us encouragement to continue working as usual," said Koke.

Saul Ñíguez began in the starting line up of the first team for the first time for Atletico but the joy he could not complete. "I debuted as a starter but if the team does not win we are not happy," said the youth.

The midfielder believes that Atletico had chances "Academica has played their cards well. They have you got an early goal and then defended well. We have not been able to score a goal to get back in to the game though we had chances in the second half" concluded the young footballer.

Atletico Madrid go down against Academica Coimbra (2-0)
  
Two goals by Wilson Eduardo end the winning streak in Europe



Atletico Madrid fell in Coimbra against an Academica who took a chance in the first half and a penalty in the second to defeat the champions of the Europa League. The team tried at all times, especially in the second half, in which the chances were clearer, but could not get the breakthrough. Simeone's team is level with Viktoria Plzen on top of the table.

Atletico Madrid reached the fourth round of the group stage with perfect record. Three wins in the first three games saw them sat at thetop of the group. Meanwhile, Academica desperately needed the win to avoid being eliminated. Manager Pedro Emanuel played an offensive team in looking for their first win in this competition.

The opposition was the reigning Europa League and UEFA Super Cup champion with 16 wins in the last 16 matches, including the finals of Bucharest and Monaco, Atletico Madrid made a formidable team, who’ve gone more than a year without losing in European competition until arriving in Portugal.

After the first minute Atletico Madrid took control of the game. The ball was in their possession and everything looked to be going to plan until a throw-in from the right ended in a cross into the area and Wilson Eduardo stepped forward to put out his toe and put the Portuguese ahead on the scoreboard. It was the first time the team from Coimbra came close to Asenjo’s goal.

After the break, Atletico Madrid was another team. Pedro came on for Saul, to give the team more offensive power, but the agression that was missing in the first half came and with it the chances for Atletico.  Koke forced a corner at the very beginning of the second half. A minute later, in the 47th, Atletico had a penalty shout turned down. Raul Garcia also went close without success.

Shortly after the second goal game from the penalty spot, Wilson Eduardo converted to make it 2-0 to the home side, enough to give them the victory and the 3 points.


Atletico Madrid still need a point to qualify for the knockout phase of the Europa League. The goal is to win against Hapoel at the Calderon on the 22nd of this month before travelling to Plzen in the final game.
