Five wins in a row
The match was quiet, with few chances for a goal and Barcelona controlled the tempo. Barcelona showed a very disciplined game plan, was strong in defence and had the skills of Ronaldinho and Xavi, combined with strong running from Saviola in attack. In the 20th minute, Xavi put Saviola clear but his hurried shot was wide. After the break the game continued to be one of containment from the Catalan side, who hit on the break. Valencia clearly missed Aimar's invention and their best chance fell to Baraja, from Vicente's cross. He hit the shot well, but Valdés made a great save and held onto a ball which came at him low, through a sea of legs. Very soon after this came the goal that settled the match, with Gerard heading home firmly from a corner. The frustrations of Valencia were increased when Carboni was harshly red carded for taking a free kick before the referee was ready, having been given a yellow earlier for handball. (report by Alex)

El choque ha visto siempre a un FC Barcelona muy concentrado y dominando en todo momento el tempo del juego. Ronaldinho, muy activo e incisivo, Xavi dominando el ritmo del partido y Gerard con su gran gol, han sido los jugadores más destacados que ha sacado con nota su siempre difícil visita a Mestalla. En el minuto 20, una buena asistencia de Xavi para Saviola ha servido para que el 'Pibito' pusiera a prueba a Cañizares, pero su disparo ha salido raso y ligeramente desviado a la derecha del portero local. Pero sin duda, la mejor ocasión ha llegado en las botas de Baraja. El ex jugador del Atlético de Madrid ha aprovechado un buen centro desde la izquierda de Vicente que ha dado el pase atrás, y el centrocampista ha rematado con todo y a la media vuelta pero Valdés ha parado lo que ya se cantaba como gol. Pero como suele suceder en el mundo del fútbol, el Barça tras evitar un gol ha marcado su primero y único mediante Gerard.
