Barcelona director Alexander Echevarría has announced that after much debate and legal proceedings, Javier Saviola has finally been granted Spanish nationality. Last Thursday (15th July) the Spanish Ministry of Justice, which was dealing with the matter, signed the documentation presented by the Argentine player in which he asked for Spanish nationalisation. The maternal grandmother of Javier, Doña Casiana, was born in the town of Cacereño in Alia, thus fulfilling one of the requirements of applying for Spanish citizenship. Saviola can now appear at the Civil Registry and swear on the Spanish Constitution. Once this ceremony is done, within the week, Saviola will have a Spanish passport. Javier was given the good news yesterday, in an SMS message, by Alexander Echevarría, the director of FC Barcelona who has been working on the matter: "Barça must thank both the previous government and the present one for the help that they have given us", Echevarría told Sport yesterday. Now Saviola must decide when he will return to Spain to finish this proceeding. At the moment he is in Peru for the Copa America and, if things do not change, he'll travel to Greece to play the with his country's Olympic team. It is logical to think that between the competitions he will find sufficient time to come to Barcelona. Barça has, in any case, asked the AFA not to send Saviola to Athens. La abuela materna de Javier, Doña Casiana, es natural del pueblo cacereño de Alia, cumpliéndose así uno de los requisitos que se piden para ser español. Los pasos que debe dar a partir de ahora Saviola son muy sencillos. Con la documentación en su poder puede presentarse en el Registro Civil y jugar la Constitución española. Una vez cumplimentado este trámite, que no demora más de una semana, Saviola ya puede tener en su poder el ansiado poder español. El argentino se enteró de la buena nueva ayer mismo gracias al mensaje SMS que le envió el directivo Alejandro Echevarría, la persona del FC Barcelona que ha estado trabajando en este tema: "El Barça debe agradecer al anterior gobierno español y al actual la ayuda que nos han dispensado", manifestó ayer Echevarría a SPORT. Es ahora Saviola quien debe decidir cuándo regresará a España para cumplimentar este trámite. Actualmente está en Perú disputando las semifinales de la Copa América y tiene previsto, si no cambia de planes, viajar a Grecia para jugar los JJ.OO. de Atenas con la selección olímpica de su país. Es lógico pensar que entre una competición y otra encontrará el tiempo suficiente para personarse en Barcelona. El Barça, de todos modos, le ha pedido a la AFA que Saviola no vaya a Atenas. Joan Laporta, presidente del FC Barcelona, declaró ayer en Palamós sobre esta noticia que "es una alegría para el club porque, entre otras cosas, libera una plaza de jugador extracomunitario que ahora podemos utilizar, siendo más factible poder configurar mejor la plantilla. También estamos muy contentos por el jugador porque es un beneficio para él". (sport)
