FC Barcelona 0 - Deportivo 2

Deportivo take the points

Barca were dominating early on, but were unable to convert that into clear cut chances against the well organized Deportivo team, for whom Naybet and Andrade in defence were outstanding. Barca's best chance came on the half hour, when Luis Garcia combined with Saviola, whose well struck shot forced Molina to pull off a great one handed stop. On 40 minutes Bara were behind, after Luque sneaked in at the near post to put away an excellent cross from Capdevilla and sent Barca in undeservedly one down at half time. Luis Garcia's shot on the hour was easily saved by Molina, but 5 minutes later the keeper was helpless as the young strikers shot hit the bar after Ronaldinho had set him up on the edge of the box. Just when Barca looked to be about to get back on level terms, Deportivo hit them again. Valeron broke through and reached the byeline, pulling the ball back for Sergio, on the edge of the box, to fire through a forest of defenders' legs and past Valdes.

I needed that goal

Javier Saviola left the dressing room with an ample smile that reflected the spirit of the squad after the comfortable victory against Zaragoza: "I am very content to have won, to have been forceful and mainly to have scored, as that's what the team needed. The best thing of this victory is that it gives us confidence". 'El Pibito' opened the scoring for the 'azulgrana' with a great header : "I don't usually score
with my head. My goal was important but the main thing is that the team won". He also talked about the penalty, the first awarded to Barcelona this season, "It's a long time since we had one" and he considered the key to the victory was "that we freely attacked our rival's goal". The Argentinian valued his goal to a great extent: "For a forward it's very important for your confidence to score goals. I was not driven crazy, but this goals helps my belief". Saviola was happy to start and said "In this team you're never certain you are going to play". The fans applauded him when he was substituted by Sergio García, a gesture for which he was thankful: "I'm very happy that the fans are with me, because that helps me". He explained the reason for this change: "During the week I had a muscle problem with my right leg and was not good, although I no longer feel any pain". This morning, the striker has an appointment in the courts of Rubí to make a statement on presumed irregularities in his contract: "Never in my life did I imagine I would be in a court. I hope that it all finishes as rapidly as possible". (translated from elmundodeportivo)

Barcelona gives joy to the Camp Nou

Paco Flores' men packed the center of the field and Barcelona could not find a way through. Gradually, Ronaldinho and Iniesta began to get a hold of the game and following a play between them, a center allowed Saviola to beat the keeper for 1-0. After falling behind, Zaragoza opened up more and it was then that the 'azulgranas' found more space. In stoppage time during the first half, the match was secured with a penalty in favour of Barcelona. Cuartero fouled Luis García and Ronaldinho scored for 2-0. Barcelona could play the second half with comfort, but mainly with much confidence, something that they have not been able to do very often this season. Xavi scored the third after more good play from Iniesta. (translated from marca)

Gurpegui brings justice to the Camp Nou

An open first half finished goalless thanks to debutant Jorquera, who made four fine saves to keep Barcelona in the match. At the break, Rijkaard went on the attack. He replaced Xavi and Luis García with Gerard and Kluivert and Barcelona began to take control, although they always looked shaky at the back, with Jorquera producing one astonishing save from a header. In the 63rd minute, Kluivert scored a good header after a link up between Davids and van Bronckhorst. Shortly afterwards, Saviola had a half chance saved by Aranzubia's feet. In the 86th minute, Rijkaard replaced the Argentinian as his team prepared to defend a long free kick. Just as he took his seat on the bench, Gurpegui levelled the scores with his head to give Athletic a deserved share of the points. (report by Alex)

(elmundodeportivo)

1 - Barcelona: Jorquera, Reiziger, Oleguer, Márquez, Van Bronckhorst, Davids, Cocu, Xavi (46' Gerard), Luis García (46' Kluivert), Ronaldinho, Saviola (86' Quaresma).

Zaragoza opens the door to the semifinals

Barcelona played a different line up to that which started the last league match. They had no wingers and played the trident of Saviola-Ronaldinho-Kluivert in attack, and only got a grip of the game towards the end of the first half. Frank Rijkaard's men had greater possession of the ball in the second half, thanks partly to the entrance of Xavi for Cocu. Kluivert failed to score in one of his rare interventions and Rijkaard replaced him. The Dutch forward had to listen to the whistles of the fans to whom he responded with applause. Overmars, the substitute of his compatriot and whose task was to open up the game, had only just come on when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Drulic and was converted by Villa, who had to take it twice, after the referee disallowed his first effort.(marca)

(marca)

0 - Barcelona: Valdés, Reiziger, Oleguer, Márquez (81' Luis García), Oscar López, Cocu (46' Xavi), Gerard, Davids, Saviola, Ronaldinho, Kluivert (72' Overmars).
1 - Zaragoza: Lainez, Rebosio, Alvaro, Milito, David Pirri, Cuartero (68' Generelo), Ponzio, Galletti, Savio (41' Cani), Drulic, Yordi (46' Villa).

Goals/Goles: 0-1, 74' Villa.

Rijkaard set to drop Saviola again

Frank Rijkaard, in his desperate attempt to once and for all find the perfect system and the right staring eleven, will decide later on his line up for the Seville match. It looks likely that Javier Saviola will begin on the bench after five consecutive starts. The centre forward, with sole responsibility for scoring the goals, will be Patrick Kluivert. The presence of the trident is discarded because not even Ronaldinho, Kluivert and Saviola appear able to guarantee an offensive game and goals, as shown last Thursday against Zaragoza. With these three on the field, Barça gave up the wings and played through the centre, where it was much easier for Zaragoza to nullify the attack. (translated from SPORT)

Here, if we lose or draw we change systems
Javier Saviola is an intelligent man. In spite of his youth he shows unusual maturity for his age. On the occasion of his 50th goal, he gave a long interview to MARCA. He analysed his situation and that of the team. He has been at Barcelona for three years, but has not won anything. His explanation is clear. This team has spent years searching for a definite style. It is not a question of this year, is the swing of trainers and tactics.

Fifty goals in 2 years is not bad.
It makes me very happy, especially when the goals help us to win games. Besides, there is still much time left for me.

Which goal stays in your memory?
The first that I scored in the Gamper Trophy against Parma. That was best because I could dedicate it to my father.
At Barça there's always a debate about goals...
In a club such as Barça or Madrid there are always critics. If you concede goals, the defense is embarrassed; if you play three games without scoring, doubts are created. It is the law of this sport in a club like Barça. The fans and the media are demanding and you have to learn how to live with it. When things do not go well, pressure arrives from many sides.

And if Ronaldo has 18 goals with Madrid it's worse, no?
It was the same with River and Boca. Comparison with your rival is inevitable. The more goals Ronaldo scores the more they compare us to him. If these comments did not exist soccer would not be so attractive.

What's happened at Barça?
We began relatively well. Then we slackened off and didn't find it easy to turn it around again. We have not had continuity. We won two games and then we lost another one. Then doubts ocurr. As soon as we win games, especially important games like vs. Real Madrid or Valencia, we will become a great club.

Is this the Barça of your dreams?
As a club, yes. They surprised me in a good way. Everywhere we go there are Barça fans. It's a whole world that surrounds people who are involved in Barça. Concerning sport, the last three years we have failed to reach the final stage of competitions. We've been eliminated early. I would like to finish my contract and to say that I have won a title with Barça. This is what makes players great: the titles. Lately there have been none.

The true Barça is the one from Sunday or the one from Zaragoza?
The inconsistency of this season means that we don't know what kind of team we are. Against Zaragoza we played one way; in Seville, another; and against Albecete something totally different... As soon as this team always plays the same way we will progress.

A lack of stability?
Ever since I came to Barça we've never played the same way. Here if you lose or you draw, and sometimes even if you win, the following match you change systems. I have had to adapt because at River it was totally different. There, the same players always played and you knew the next match you were going to play. Here you never know. Every Sunday they surprise you with new tactics and it is never the same team as the previous Sunday. The first year with Rexach we played a more attacking style with Patrick and Rivaldo; then van Gaal, who liked commitment, marking and running; Antic arrived, and we returned to offensive tactics; and now Rijkaard, who plays with a single forward. When they ask me how I play at Barça it's hard to respond because I've had many coaches and tactics.
You believe in the trident?
I do, yes. And there has been more than one in the three years I've been here. I believe in the trident because I have felt very comfortable when I have played with Rivaldo or with Kluivert up front.

But this year you've hardly played a couple of games ...
Every coach thinks in a particular way and when things don't go well, there are changes

Is the squad under pressure for its late nights going out?
When you don't win there are always doubts. Now the player's
night life and staying out late has to be the reason. The nights out are necessary for the players to be able to relax.

Are these excuses on behalf of someone?
There are comments that are get bigger and bigger and turn into a big thing. It would be better to pay attention to what each one does on the pitch and not to their private life.

Does the intensity of the environment at the club surprise you?
These things are not new. It surprised me in the beginning, but not now. There's always talk of who should leave, of new signings, of countless things... Things are brought to light very easely. There will always be bad comments and you have to get used to living with it.

Everything is at stake in the next four matches?
They will be games against our direct rivals, who will make things difficult for us. We cannot lose nor draw. I would like to win all four, but if we win three I think that will be good, considering that we play three matches away from the Camp Nou.

Do you understand that Ronaldinho was upset when he left the pitch?
Each player thinks in his own way. Ronaldinho was playing well, wanted to continue and nobody likes to be substituted. He responded this way and he will have his reasons. I already know how it feels sitting on the bench and one has to get used to it.

Every week it's a question of you or Kluivert ...
We only play with one forward. You can only hope that you will be chosen.
What about the rumours that you'll be sold?
They do not worry me, nor that my face has appeared in newspapers. When somebody comes and says to me that I must go, then I will worry. I understand that this can affect some. There are players who take things very much to heart. Each has his personality and some can be discouraged.

And your nationalisation?
We are awaiting it. We already did everything that we had to do. We initiated the proceedings and we are going to finish them.

That sounds like a reproach.
When I was asked about this subject I already said that we had no support. We've done everything by ourselves.

Isn't this a bit strange?
I prefer being confident and not thinking of bad intentions.

Next year, do you see yourself more inside or outside of Barça?
I train, play and dedicate myself to Barça. I don't take the comments seriously. As long as nothing is clear I don't give them any importance.
Luis F. Rojo (Marca)
