Getafe will be the opponent in the second round
  
The rojiblancos come up against Luis Garcia’s men in the next round of the tournament


After overcoming Real Jaen 4-0 on aggregate, Atletico Madrid will face Getafe in the second round of the Copa del Rey.

Getafe has seal their passage after beating second division Ponferradina. This season Atletico beat Getafe in Week 11 of the National League 2-0 in the Calderon. Arda Turan and Adrian were the authors of the goals.

Atletico beat Real Jaén by a goal to nil at the Calderon and will face Getafe in the next round of the Copa del Rey



Atletico did their homework and beat Jaén with an early goal from Raul Garcia. The three goals in the first leg were enough to seal the victory against the Andalusian and will face Getafe in the last 16.

If anyone had any doubt of motivation for Atletico in the knockout stages of the Copa del Rey, it only took a few minutes to clarify the ambition of Simeone’s team. The team that the Argentine coach put out took control of the match from the start as in the first leg and there was never any doubt in the tie.

With the distinguishing characteristic of Atletico, intensity, grit and speed down the flanks, Adrian took only 4 minutes to test the visitors' keeper. With a shot from the edge of the area, the Spaniard forced the keeper at save at full stretch. Atletico came out and recorded their twelfth straight win in their stadium.

In each passing game it is more difficult for Simeone to choose his warriors. Every player is showing that they deserve more minutes. With a fierce hunger, Atletico flew in to the lead and again near the area defended by Manu. The result of this pressure come the first goal. Cisma broke in to the last third and played the ball in to Adrian who supplied Raul Garcia with the ammunition to make it 1-0.

The first fifteen minutes of the match was all Atletico and Cristian Rodriguez quickly became the star of the game with his power and his actions on the left. Emre too shone in the opening exchanges and just after the half-hour mark the Turkish midfielder went just inches of the goal.

The second forty-five minutes went the sae way. Jaén were very tidy and kept in the game but couldn’t find the breakthrough. Simeone used the final half hour to introduce enw legs, substituting Manquillo for Oliver Torres to make his debut at the Calderon with Atletico in an official meeting. Later, Saul Ñíguez also came on to replace Cristian Rodriguez who left the field with a complaint in the back of the right thigh.

Despite the 4-0 aggregate score line, Atletico did not stop looking for more goals. Adrian finished off a neat move by Raul Garcia and Cata Diaz came close to adding to his tally with the red and whites but couldn’t convert the chance.

With cup qualification complete its time for the rojiblancos turn their focus to the game played next Saturday at the Bernabeu.

As we all know by now, our biggest game of the season comes around this weekend, but before the derby there is still the second leg of our Copa del Rey tie against Real Jaén on Wednesday night to take care of.

“Partido a partido” is the phrase everyone keeps pointing to, and this game will serve as a good chance to see some of our youngsters in first team action.

Kick-off in the Calderón is 19:30 CET.

On Sunday, the home crowd witnessed a superb showing as Atleti thrashed Sevilla, and they will be hoping for another big win to really build up the momentum ahead of the big one.

Again, Cholo has decided to rotate and make the most of the payroll, and with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg a month ago, we may now get the chance to see a few of the canteranos step up.

Only two players in the squad, Courtois and Miranda, are expected to start in the Bernabéu, with Juanfran, Godín, Filipe, Mario, Gabi, Arda, Koke, Diego Costa and Falcao all given a watching brief.

Instead, the back-up players will get a chance to play and gain fitness should they be needed on Saturday, as well as B-team stars Javi Manquillo, Saúl Ñíguez, Óliver Torres and Pedro Martín.

Fans will be anticipating a home debut for the much-hyped Óliver especially, but all four have been progressing well and more than deserve a chance in a game like this.

Manquillo has played every minute of action in Segunda B this season, whereas Saúl is the reserves’ top scorer so far with five goals from midfield. Pedro, traditionally a centre-forward, has been utilised in more of a wide role – even wearing the number 7 shirt – but is one of the key players still.

In his press conference this morning, Simeone typically highlighted the importance of keeping to the game-by-game approach, as well as giving confidence to the Cantera and the potential our young players have.

“The most important thing for us is the next game,” he said. “There will be time to think about the derby after Wednesday, now we hope to finish the tie we started in Jaén.”

When asked whether the kids drafted into the 16-man squad would get a chance to start, the suggestions were positive.

“The fans like to see us win and that’s what we want to do, but if you can show them the future with our canteranos, that’s always much better. They are the future for us all, especially the way things are economically.”

“Tomorrow we’ll have a team out that can win.” he finished.

Back in October, Cholo gave minutes to Óliver and Saúl but only as subsitutes as Atleti ran out 3-0 winners in Jaén, with goals from Diego Costa, Adrián and Raúl García sealing the win that night.

However, Manolo Herrero’s side were not disheartened by the defeat, and like the Rojiblancos are second domestically, hot on the trail of league-leaders Cartagena.

The last time they visited the Calderón was back in 2001, with Fernando Torres scoring his second goal for the club in a 2-0 win. Getafe or Ponferradina await us in the round of 16 should we progress, with the La Liga outfit firmly in control after the first leg.

Atletico Madrid start preparing the Copa del Rey match against Jaen
  
Those who were not starters against Sevilla trained for an hour and a quarter



Atletico Madrid are already thinking about the second leg of the knockout phase of the Copa del Rey against Real Jaen next Wednesday at the Estadio Vicente Calderon (19:30 hours). Those who were starters against Sevilla had the day off, while the rest trained for an hour and a quarter on field 1 of the Sports City. The session involved a lot of ball work and included five players from the youth and two Americans who are training with Atletico B and form part of the collaboration with the Chicago Fire, with whom Atletico has strategic partnership.

11 first team players trained: Cata Diaz, Cisma, Pulido, Silvio, Emre, Raul Garcia, Mario Suarez, Adrian, Cristian Rodriguez with Asenjo and Joel in goals. Atletico B goalkeeper Bono and two players from Atletico Madrid Youth Honor Division, Ivi and Koke joined the session. Bono joined when Asenjo pulled up with some discomfort in his stomach. To these were added two juveniles, Benja and Nacho, as well as Austin and Anibaba, the two Americans from Chiago Fire.
