Work continues at Valdebebas Heinze and Marcelo do recovery exercises Real Madrid continued preparing for Saturday's clash with Almería. Heinze and Marcelo did recovery work on the pitch aside from the rest of the team. The Champions League will return in a couple of weeks, giving Bernd Schuster some breathing room to work with the same intensity without the added stress of having a mid-week clash. Recovering players Heinze continues doing recovery work on the fibrilar tear on one of his knees. He took the pitch with recovery expert José Luis San Martín today and did some jogging exercises. Marcelo, who is injured with a bruise on one of his thighs, joined them while Saviola and Pepe patiently did recovery work in the gym. Diarra didn't train today. He's been missing several sessions due to Mali's participation in the African Cup. His team was eliminated by Ivory Coast and the player is expected to return to Madrid shortly. Gago didn't train this morning either; he will miss the encounter on Saturday due to suspension. Physical exercisies with the ball The rest of the squad jogged and did stretching exercises at the start of the session, after which they did some intensity, strengthening and resistance exercises, consisting on moving their arms and legs quickly, jumping and sprinting. The players then did some more stretching work-outs prior to doing some ball work and playing piggy-in-the-middle, while the Casillas, Dudek and Codina trained with keeper coach Pedro Jaro.

Thursday training

Metzelder and Van Nistelrooy miss the session

Real Madrid attended their penultimate session of the week prior to the clash with Almeria. Eighteen players did physical and ball exercises, while Gago and Heinze trained aside from the squad. Saviola and Pepe stayed in the gym, Marcelo rejoined the group and Van Nistelroyy missed training for being ill with gastroenteritis.
The League is far from being won, so the squad trains hard every day to continue to do well and keep their lead in the competition. Their only goal now is to defeat Almeria on Saturday. Heinze and Gago
Gabriel Heinze once again trained hard with recovery expert José Luis San Martín, doing specific exercises to leave his injury behind. His left leg seems to be responding well to the work-out, giving signs of recovery on the tear on his femoral biceps. Fernando Gago trained on his own on the pitch this morning, recovering from a bruise on his right thigh. He jogged and did gym work. The Argentine will miss Saturday's encounter due to suspension.

Metzelder missed training and is waiting to have some tests run to see how well he is recovering from the plantar fasciitis he's been suffering from of late. Diarra will return to the team on Friday now that Mali are out of the African Cup. Saviola and Pepe did specific recovery exercises in the gym, and Van Nistelrooy missed the session because he is sick with gastroenteritis. The rest jogged and tackled an obstacle course in which they sprinted for short distances and practiced dribbling the ball prior to shooting on goal.

Van Nistelrooy back in action

Real Madrid closed out a week of preparations on Friday with one last workout before Saturday's clash at the Mediterranean Games Stadium in Almeria. Ruud Van Nistelrooy was back in action after sitting out on Thursday, while Gago trained away from the group. Diarra has returned from the African Cup and worked out in the gym.
This morning's training session kicked off with several games prepared by fitness expert Jordi García and designed to loosen up muscles and get blood flowing. Marcelo, who missed the first workout of the week because of a bruised thigh which kept him sidelined against Villarreal, returned to the squad on Thursday and today put the finishing touch on his recovery. The biggest sigh of relief was seeing Ruud Van Nistelrooy back on the turf. The Dutchman showed up on Thursday with severe gastroentiritis and was immediately sent home to rest, but he returned to work today and trained alongside his teammates without incident. Both Marcelo and Ruud are fit to travel to Almeria.
Fernando Gago, however, will stay in Madrid to serve his one-game suspension. The Argentine trained for the first time yesterday and repeated the same course of action on Friday. Compatriot Gabriel Heinze continued his recovery protocol, and although he was seen jogging on Thursday, today called for an indoor session of gym work.
Metzelder did not train and is awaiting further tests to determine the severity of his left plantar fasciitis, while Pepe and Saviola focused their recovery efforts in the gymnasium. The same can be said for Mahamadou Diarra, who wasn't seen on the turf after his recent return from the African Cup of Nations. While their men played on one end of the practice pitch, Bernd Schuster and Manolo Ruíz exchanged opinions, studied options , and discussed what minutes later would unfold as the the second half of the workout which emphasized tactics.

Van Nistelrooy, Soldado, and Diarra are fit to play
Heinze, Saviola, Pepe, and Metzelder are injured and will not travel to Almería. Gago will also stay in Madrid to serve his one match suspension, while third string keeper Jordi Codina has been left off the list due to a coaching decision. Although they were questionable earlier this week, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Marcelo, and Soldado are fit for action.
