Espanyol say Barcelona's Argentine striker Javier Saviola wants to join them on loan.
"Espanyol is Saviola's first choice and he is very interested in coming here," Espanyol sports director Cristobal Parralo told a news conference on Friday.
"He has told us he would love to join us and would like to do the deal as soon as possible."
The main sticking point in the negotiation appears to be the player's wages. Media reports put Saviola's salary at 3.8 million euros a year ($4.6 million)
"We are not going to exceed our current salary levels," Parralo added.
The 23-year-old international was left out of Barca's squad for their pre-season tour of Japan and China which started on Thursday.
Saviola returned to the Spanish champions on Wednesday after a season-long loan at Ligue 1 side Monaco but coach Frank Rijkaard has made it clear he is surplus to requirements.
The diminutive former River Plate striker has been in contact with Espanyol and Atletico Madrid, while Sevilla have also shown interest.

Espanyol to win Saviola race
Sources in Spain claim that Javier Saviola is almost certain to join Barcelona's city rivals Espanyol on loan.
The Argentine striker has been informed for a second season running by Barca boss Frank Rijkaard that he does not feature in his first-team plans.
The slight South American spent last term on loan at Monaco but was hopeful of getting the chance to re-establish himself at Camp Nou this time around.
That has not proved to be the case, however, and Barca's free transfer capture of Santiago Ezquerro has merely served to push him further down the pecking order.
Atletico Madrid and Sevilla were thought to be in the race to land Saviola on loan, but while Barca have now revealed that Real Zaragoza and Benfica are also in the hunt for the 23-year-old, it is Espanyol who are quite clearly in pole position.
Sources close to the Catalan outfit insist the deal is all but done, although it has been suggested in some quarters that a few Barca directors are reticent about seeing the player end up at their city rivals.

Espanyol are on the verge of a super Argentine double signing - Javier Saviola and Claudio Lopez.
Saviola was left behind as Barcelona's squad jetted to the Far East on Thursday night. The striker was fielding offers from four clubs yesterday, Espanyol, Benfica, Real Zaragoza and Deportivo La Coruna.
But he wants to remain in Barcelona, where he lives with his Mum in Sant Cugat. "We don't want to break our wage structure for this signing," revealed Espanyol spokesman Jose Luis Morlanes, "therefore we are trying to find an imaginative solution."
Meanwhile, Lopez's agent is in talks with Espanyol about a return to Spain for the ex-Valencia star. Argentina international Lopez is available from Lazio on a free transfer after spending the last two seasons on-loan with Club America in Mexico.
