Mexico shock Argentina
BBC 2004.07.11
Mexico 1-0 Argentina
Morales' goal left Argentina third in Group B
A brilliant Ramon Morales free-kick gave Mexico a shock win over Group B rivals Argentina in the Copa America.
Argentina had begun the tournament with a 6-1 demolition of Ecuador, but defeat to Mexico will increase the pressure
on under-fire coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Argentina, now third in the group behind Uruguay and Mexico, never managed to find the flowing football they produced
against Ecuador.
Javier Saviola, who scored a hat-trick on Wednesday, produced only fleeting patches of his best form.
Argentina made a bright start but were stunned in the ninth minute when Morales opened the scoring with a swerving
free kick which flew into the top corner past helpless goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri.
The goal unsettled the Argentines, who resorted to some rough tackling to halt the Mexican counter attacks.
Jesus Arellano, in particular, was a menace to the Argentines almost every time he got the ball.
Mexico had an excellent chance to increase their lead just before half-time when Jared Borgetti was first to Pavel Pardo's
free kick, but his header was weak and easily saved.
Almost immediately at the other end, Argentine striker Cesar Delgado popped up unmarked on the right to meet a
floated cross from Andres D'Alessandro but he fired his effort over the crossbar.
Argentina took control after half-time, forcing a flurry of corners in the first quarter of an hour.
They were twice denied by goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez, who blocked a shot by Luis Gonzalez and then brilliantly pushed
away Roberto Ayala's header following a corner.
But Argentina could not find an equaliser and now face a crucial third game against current leaders Uruguay on 13 July.
Saviola was well-marked this time
Uruguay 2-1 Ecuador
Bueno set up a crunch final game against Argentina in Group C
Carlos Bueno stabbed home a 79th-minute goal to give Uruguay victory over Ecuador in Group C.
Manchester United striker Diego Forlan put Uruguay ahead just after the hour mark with an incisive run and shot from
outside the box.
However, Ecuador hit back when Ulises de la Cruz's cross created confusion in the penalty area and substitute Franklin
Salas smacked home the equaliser from close range.
But just six minutes later, Uruguay were back in front.
Ecuador keeper Oswaldo Ibarra fumbled a shot from Vicente Sanchez, and Bueno was quickest to the loose ball.
It was no more than Uruguay deserved, despite a much improved performance from Ecuador, who were thrashed 6-1 by
Argentina in their opening game.
GROUP B
1. Uruguay 4pts
2. Mexico 4pts
3. Argentina 3pt
4. Ecuador 0pts

Hosts Peru have lost their captain Claudio Pizarro for the rest of the tournament after he received a serious head
injury in his country's 3-1 win over Venezuela on Friday.

7-Javier Saviola (4,5): No pudo sacar diferencias.

Ratings from Olé
1-Roberto Abbondanzieri (4,5): Responsible for the goal, because he came out instead of jumping to save the free
kick shot. He took the only risk.
8-Javier Zanetti (5): He fulfilled his marking and throwing-in role...
2-Roberto Ayala (6): Apart from some difficulties controlling the huge Borgetti, the captain was reliable. He almost
created a draw.
6-Gabriel Heinze (6,5): Since Sorin was always disappearing, he had to cover almost the whole of the left side. He
was the best in the national team and he was kept busy with a couple of very dangerous central players.
3-Juan Pablo Sorin (5): Vague, he wasn't Kily González's partner...
5-Javier Mascherano (6): The only one who managed to gain a foothold against a very combatative team like the
Mexicans. He was only troubled a little by [Mexican striker Jesus] Arellano.
16-Luis González (4): He was the alternative player to create chances when D'Alessandro couldn't. He never
fulfilled that role. Yes, he contributed a little in defence, with a couple of blocks.
18-Cristian González (5): He constantly showed a fighting spirit in the first half... But he got tired in the end and
only made complaints.
10-Andre's D'Alessandro (4,5): His worst performance. His passing was poor, he was insignificant and fought with
all the opponents. He trod on and kicked one of them in the first half.
19-César Delgado (4): He started very well... It's a shame his enthusiasm only lasted five minutes. He had two
clear chances to score and wasted them.
7-Javier Saviola (4,5): He couldn't make a difference. With a closed-down Mexican defence, it made it hard for him
to create space between the central defenders. He seldom tested the goalkeeper.
21-Mauro Rosales (4): He came on because Cesar was no good, but he played as badly as El Chelito [Cesar
Delgado].
11-Carlos Tevez (4): He got lost on the right wing. He rarely entered the game, he didn't know how to mark, and
he lacked a lot of commitment.
9-Luciano Figueroa (5): He tried to turn things around in a quarter of an hour. Lucho at least contributed more in
attack than Saviola.
