Atletico Madrid start preparing the Copa del Rey match against Jaen
Those who were not starters against Sevilla trained for an hour and a quarter
Atletico Madrid are already thinking about the second leg of the knockout phase of the Copa del Rey against Real Jaen next Wednesday at the Estadio Vicente Calderon (19:30 hours). Those who were starters against Sevilla had the day off, while the rest trained for an hour and a quarter on field 1 of the Sports City. The session involved a lot of ball work and included five players from the youth and two Americans who are training with Atletico B and form part of the collaboration with the Chicago Fire, with whom Atletico has strategic partnership.
11 first team players trained: Cata Diaz, Cisma, Pulido, Silvio, Emre, Raul Garcia, Mario Suarez, Adrian, Cristian Rodriguez with Asenjo and Joel in goals. Atletico B goalkeeper Bono and two players from Atletico Madrid Youth Honor Division, Ivi and Koke joined the session. Bono joined when Asenjo pulled up with some discomfort in his stomach. To these were added two juveniles, Benja and Nacho, as well as Austin and Anibaba, the two Americans from Chiago Fire.

Atletico Madrid prepared the Copa del Rey match with a workout that lasted an hour and a half with the group split into two. Miranda, Arda Turan, Falcao, Joel, Mario Suarez, Diego Costa, Gabi, Juanfran, Godin, Koke, Filipe Luis and Asenjo performed physical labor and ball work for a quarter of an hour.
After the press conference, the Atletico coach gave the list of 16 squad for the Copa del Rey match:

Simeone: "We want to close the tie after the game Jaén"

Diego Pablo Simeone appeared before the media before the game against Real Jaen in the second leg of the knockout phase of the Copa del Rey. In the first leg, Atletico won 0-3. The Atletico coach spoke about preparing for the Copa del Rey match prior to the visit to the Santiago Bernabeu saying "the same thing happens to us when we prepare the match against Athletic & Chelsea just before. There will be time on Wednesday to think about the other game."
Simeone made it clear that the philosophy is important to take each game as it comes. "It is what we feel. We respect our opponent and see what happens. The most important thing is that we have to play." he said.

Chance for the kids to shine as Rojiblancos aim to seal cup tie

As we all know by now, our biggest game of the season comes around this weekend, but before the derby there is still the second leg of our Copa del Rey tie against Real Jaén on Wednesday night to take care of.
“Partido a partido” is the phrase everyone keeps pointing to, and this game will serve as a good chance to see some of our youngsters in first team action.
Kick-off in the Calderón is 19:30 CET.
On Sunday, the home crowd witnessed a superb showing as Atleti thrashed Sevilla, and they will be hoping for another big win to really build up the momentum ahead of the big one.
Again, Cholo has decided to rotate and make the most of the payroll, and with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg a month ago, we may now get the chance to see a few of the canteranos step up.
Only two players in the squad, Courtois and Miranda, are expected to start in the Bernabéu, with Juanfran, Godín, Filipe, Mario, Gabi, Arda, Koke, Diego Costa and Falcao all given a watching brief.
Instead, the back-up players will get a chance to play and gain fitness should they be needed on Saturday, as well as B-team stars Javi Manquillo, Saúl Ñíguez, Óliver Torres and Pedro Martín.
Fans will be anticipating a home debut for the much-hyped Óliver especially, but all four have been progressing well and more than deserve a chance in a game like this.
Manquillo has played every minute of action in Segunda B this season, whereas Saúl is the reserves’ top scorer so far with five goals from midfield. Pedro, traditionally a centre-forward, has been utilised in more of a wide role – even wearing the number 7 shirt – but is one of the key players still.
In his press conference this morning, Simeone typically highlighted the importance of keeping to the game-by-game approach, as well as giving confidence to the Cantera and the potential our young players have.
“The most important thing for us is the next game,” he said. “There will be time to think about the derby after Wednesday, now we hope to finish the tie we started in Jaén.”
When asked whether the kids drafted into the 16-man squad would get a chance to start, the suggestions were positive.
“The fans like to see us win and that’s what we want to do, but if you can show them the future with our canteranos, that’s always much better. They are the future for us all, especially the way things are economically.”
“Tomorrow we’ll have a team out that can win.” he finished.
Back in October, Cholo gave minutes to Óliver and Saúl but only as subsitutes as Atleti ran out 3-0 winners in Jaén, with goals from Diego Costa, Adrián and Raúl García sealing the win that night.
However, Manolo Herrero’s side were not disheartened by the defeat, and like the Rojiblancos are second domestically, hot on the trail of league-leaders Cartagena.
The last time they visited the Calderón was back in 2001, with Fernando Torres scoring his second goal for the club in a 2-0 win. Getafe or Ponferradina await us in the round of 16 should we progress, with the La Liga outfit firmly in control after the first leg.

Atlético Madrid have qualified for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey after beating Real Jaén 4-0 over two games.
Two weeks ago the Rojiblancos had already secured their passage with a 3-0 away win, and on Wednesday night they sealed the deal with a minimal victory at the Vicente Calderón.
Next up in the knock-out tournament is a Madrid derby. We’ll take on Getafe on the 12th of December, after they bested Segunda División-side Ponferradina 4-0 over two legs.
Looking ahead at that other local clash, this Saturday against Real Madrid, Diego Simeone again used a cup competition to rest his key players and give others a run out. In the early goings the backup defence showed to be missing chemistry, but Atleti remained unscathed and actually finished off the double encounter early on in this return leg.
After just fifteen minutes Raúl García picked up the ball and blasted the leather towards the far corner to score his seventh goal of the campaign, as he left goalkeeper Manu without a chance. The midfielder, who seems to play a part at some point in all of our games, is Atlético’s highest scorer this season behind Radamel Falcao.
With the Copa tie decided and the upcoming game in the back of their minds, it seemed the Atleti players allowed themselves to get comfortable and save some energy. The only moments of danger in front of Manu’s area were provided by the home team’s set pieces, all taken by Emre Belözöglü.
At the other end Sergio Asenjo pulled off a magnificent save to keep Atleti’s ongoing streak of five consecutive clean sheets intact. Besides the defensive effort, Atleti also continued their impressive run of 11 straight victories at home this season, where we’re yet to drop a point.
Unfortunately, a few minutes before the end Cebolla Rodríguez suffered what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and had to be replaced by Saúl Ñíguez, who along with starter Javi Manquillo and substitute Óliver Torres was one of three B-players to feature on the night. The extent of the injury is still unknown, but the Uruguayan is a major doubt for Atleti’s upcoming derbies.

Simeone: I’m happy with the way they played
Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone was satisfied with the way his team performed in a 1-0 (4-0 agg) Copa del Rey win over Segunda B side, Jaen on Wednesday evening at the Vicente Calderon, and praised the squad for their commitment and intensity, after coming into the match with a sizeable lead.
In his post-match press conference, Simeone analysed the match and noted the difference between previous matches in which he had played a number of bench players.
“I am happy with the way they played.Except for the match against Academica (a Europa League loss), where we didn’t play the way we normally do, we have played the matches in the best way possible.This allowed us to get stock of Raul (Garcia), who has faced criticisms but always makes the most of his minutes and the same with Tiago. He had a good game against Sevilla and another one tonight.
“The great thing about tonight was the boys came out with intensity from the beginning to the end. The first half was very good, with a quick pace that allowed us to get chances on goal.The second half slowed down to a more controlled rhythm.¨
Simeone went on to praise their next round opponent, Madrid-based, Getafe.
“We expect to find a very difficult opponent, you could make the case that it will be an even tie, giving it even great importance.They had a great result the other day in Barcelona (Espanyol) and we must be prepared for a hard and difficult match.”

Victory and through to the last 16
Atletico beat Real Jaén by a goal to nil at the Calderon and will face Getafe in the next round of the Copa del Rey
Atletico did their homework and beat Jaén with an early goal from Raul Garcia. The three goals in the first leg were enough to seal the victory against the Andalusian and will face Getafe in the last 16.
If anyone had any doubt of motivation for Atletico in the knockout stages of the Copa del Rey, it only took a few minutes to clarify the ambition of Simeone’s team. The team that the Argentine coach put out took control of the match from the start as in the first leg and there was never any doubt in the tie.
With the distinguishing characteristic of Atletico, intensity, grit and speed down the flanks, Adrian took only 4 minutes to test the visitors' keeper. With a shot from the edge of the area, the Spaniard forced the keeper at save at full stretch. Atletico came out and recorded their twelfth straight win in their stadium.
In each passing game it is more difficult for Simeone to choose his warriors. Every player is showing that they deserve more minutes. With a fierce hunger, Atletico flew in to the lead and again near the area defended by Manu. The result of this pressure come the first goal. Cisma broke in to the last third and played the ball in to Adrian who supplied Raul Garcia with the ammunition to make it 1-0.
The first fifteen minutes of the match was all Atletico and Cristian Rodriguez quickly became the star of the game with his power and his actions on the left. Emre too shone in the opening exchanges and just after the half-hour mark the Turkish midfielder went just inches of the goal.
The second forty-five minutes went the sae way. Jaén were very tidy and kept in the game but couldn’t find the breakthrough. Simeone used the final half hour to introduce enw legs, substituting Manquillo for Oliver Torres to make his debut at the Calderon with Atletico in an official meeting. Later, Saul Ñíguez also came on to replace Cristian Rodriguez who left the field with a complaint in the back of the right thigh.
Despite the 4-0 aggregate score line, Atletico did not stop looking for more goals. Adrian finished off a neat move by Raul Garcia and Cata Diaz came close to adding to his tally with the red and whites but couldn’t convert the chance.
With cup qualification complete its time for the rojiblancos turn their focus to the game played next Saturday at the Bernabeu.

Getafe has seal their passage after beating second division Ponferradina. This season Atletico beat Getafe in Week 11 of the National League 2-0 in the Calderon. Arda Turan and Adrian were the authors of the goals.

"The good thing about today was the commitment and intensity with which from the beginning the players displayed to close out the match. The first half we played well, with a very high rate of intensity which allowed us to have enough chances on goal. The second half was played with a different rhythm, but obviously looking to control the game."
The Atletico coach hadpraise for the opponent. "Jaén is a team that kept the ball well, moving it around in the middle of the park.Hopefully they can keep playing this football in a category that is very difficult, with a lot of competition. What I have seen is that they play very well," he said.
The Argentine coach was delighted with his team's performance. "It makes me happy how it this group of players has played, except the game against Academia, in which we could not live up to our hopes. They have always played matches in the best way and that serves as an example."
The Atletico coach spoke about Getafe, the opponent in the next round of the cup: "Getafe will be a hard and difficult opponent. They have a ground to make it difficult and a good cup history. We’ll have to be very careful.”
