Match preview: Atlético vs. Hapoel Tel-Aviv
Atleti call upon their fringe players to secure Europa League passage

Match Previews - Posted on November 21, 2012 by Billy Edwards - 19 Comments

Qualification to the last 32 of the Europa League can be sealed on Thursday night, as Atlético host the group’s bottom side Hapoel Tel-Aviv at the Vicente Calderón.

Despite defeat at Académica on the last matchday, Diego Simeone has again decided to rotate his squad for the visit of the Israeli outfit, with Sunday’s clash against Sevilla perhaps in mind.

Kick-off in the Spanish capital is set for 21:05 CET.

On Sunday, the red and whites secured a second successive win at Granada after our early November blip, and will be looking to continue building momentum ahead of some of the games we have coming up.

In September our fringe players put in a commanding performance away at Hapoel to win 3-0, and they will be looking to replicate that showing in front of the home fans tomorrow.

Only a win will 100% guarantee our place in the next round at this stage, and with Viktoria Plzeň level at the top of the group, anything other than victory against a side already eliminated from the competition will be seen as unacceptable.

As far as squad news goes, Radamel Falcao, Arda Turan, Gabi, Diego Godín, Juanfran and Filipe have all been given a rest, with Domingo Cisma, Sílvio and Jorge Pulido returning to the squad.

B-team players Saúl Ñíguez, who turns 18 today, Kader Oueslati and Pedro Martín are also called-up, as has been the case throughout the competition so far.

The defeat in Portugal two weeks ago has complicated things slightly as far as winning the group goes, but Cholo stressed in his press conference that his team will be fully motivated to put things right.

“We need to have a good game, stay top of the table and qualify as group leaders,” he told them. “The game against Hapoel has our full attention, as we want to be back in the Europa League in the new year.”

Simeone will also complete his 50th game in charge against the Red Demons on Thursday, but refused to give too much significance to individual statistics.

“Managers live for the next match. After the losses to Valencia and Académica we were not comfortable. We need to to focus, because, as I said long ago, these types of statistics are situations that you will leave behind.”

On the pitch, Cholo is likely to pair Adrián and Diego Costa in attack, with both playing for a starting role against Sevilla at the weekend.

Our Europa League regulars such as Sílvio, Cata Díaz, Emre, Cristian Rodríguez and Pulido will probably play too, and Mario Suárez is also expected to start given that he’ll be suspended on Sunday.

In addition to those, our designated goalkeeper for this competition, Sergio Asenjo, will also come in for Thibaut Courtois, and he spoke to the press about his role at the club earlier in the week.

“Last year I felt very good, it was a year of transition. Now I am happy to play in Europe and help the team, as it is an important step”, he said. ”Nobody’s place is safe, and I hope Simeone will continue to be confident in me.”

As for the visitors, only pride is at stake following their premature exit in Plzeň a fortnight ago. They have also seen the departure of manager Nitzan Shirazi since our last meeting, now under the guidance of his assistant Yossi Abukasis.

Currently joint-top of their domestic league and in a race for the title, they are not expected to field their strongest team in the Calderón, with Walid Badir, Toto Tamuz and the suspended Eric Djemba-Djemba all left in Tel-Aviv for the match.

Atlético match selection:
Goalkeepers: Asenjo, Courtois
Defenders: Pulido, Cisma, Sílvio, Cata Díaz, Miranda, Kader
Midfielders: Mario Suárez, Tiago, Koke, Raúl García, Cristian Rodríguez, Emre, Saúl
Forwards: Adrián, Diego Costa, Pedro

Referee: Martin Hansson (Sweden)

In search of qualification

Atletico wants to mathematically qualify against Hapoel

Atletico is like a fish in water when playing at home in Europe. Diego Pablo Simeone men want to harness the Vicente Calderon `factor 'to beat Hapoel Tel Aviv (from 21.05 live @ Atleti) and thus certify their place in the knockout phase of the Europa League. With first place in Group B as a priority.

Simeone has called up 18 players including youngsters Kader, Pedro and Saul. They will be without Joel, Godin, Filipe, Gabi, Arda, Falcao and Juanfran for technical reasons, the Atletico coach is confident that his players will follow in the same line and not get caught out with any surprises.

Hapoel Tel Aviv will be in charge of trying to stop Atletico going through. The team led by Yossi Abukasis has no option to reach the next round of the competition but still want to enjoy the competition. With nothing to lose, the Israeli team arrives at the Calderon to enjoy the scenery and to improve a stat: Tel Aviv have won only one of the 16 games they have played against Spanish opposition. Atletico are hungry and strong in the Calderón. The rojiblancos want to reach the last 16 and want to do it now.

Simeone: "We must win and keep our place at the top of the table to qualify first"

"The points and the results are an important tihng to the team and players"

The coach of Atletico Madrid, Diego Pablo Simeone, spoke of the importance of the match against Hapoel Tel Aviv, for the fifth round of Group B in the Europa League, and insisted on going in to the game with top concentration: "We need to have a good game, sustain our position at the top of the table to qualify in first place. We must focus on the game against Hapoel, win and be able to come back in February at an important time in the Europa League."

Simeone, who celebrates his 50th game as manager against Hapoel does not put too much emphasis on individual statistics: "The coaches live for the match. After losing to Valencia and Academia, we need to focus and, as I said long ago, these statistics are situations are a thing of the past. The time will come to look at them, but now we have to think about what we do well and avoid any surprises."

Simeone `pointed to the work done during the preseason as one reason for the smooth running of Atletico Madrid: "The best thing that has happened is that we have formed a strong group. With that strength and that everyone understands that there is internal competition since preseason, which is what we talked about when we started training. Everyone worked very well physically, tactically we’re getting better after ten months and that creates the teams identity, aggressiveness, strength, pace with finishing ability. If we move away from these situations, we find more difficulties and the team suffers. When we get things right, we discover new things."

The Atletico Madrid coach also spoke of Radamel Falcao: "We in the changing room do not stop to think about Falcao. He is with us, we see him happy in every game, he is a big part of the team, he is a competitive player and the truth is that we do not stop to analyse everything."

Simeone summarized what he wants from the meeting in the continental competition: "The match against Hapoel has to be approached with high concentration and we will continue doing what we do good."

"The points and the results are an important asset for the team and for the players. The players have done things very well so far in the league and all this enthusiasm is contagious" concluded Diego Pablo Simeone.

Asenjo: "We have to play a good game, win and seal qualification"

"The opportunity the coach has given me in this competition is very important"

Sergio Asenjo was happy and satisfied at the press conference before the Europa League match on Thursday, starting at 21:05 am at the Vicente Calderon, in which Atletico Madrid face Hapoel Tel-Aviv. The keeper spoke of the trust the coach and the coaching staff are giving him in continental competition: "In the beginning I had not spoken with the coach or anyone of the coaching staff, but they are relying on me in Europe. I'll try to keep doing the right things. I am very happy every time I read the team sheet and see that I'm playing in European competition."

"Since last year, in a season of transition with the injury, I was all right and the truth is that I'm very happy. For me playing in Europe is a very important step. For so long without playing and suddenly, I’m working hard and the coach is giving me an opportunity in this competition, which is a very important opportunity. I will try to continue doing what I’m doing," said Sergio Asenjo.

Europa League: Atlético 1 – 0 Hapoel
Early goal by Raúl García seals passage to next round

Match Reports - Posted on November 22, 2012 by Derek Maaijen - 2 Comments

Atlético Madrid have qualified for the next round of the Europa League courtesy of an early strike by Raúl García.

On a chilly November night at the Vicente Calderón the midfielder scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv.

There was little at stake on Thursday night, which actually made for an open game at the Vicente Calderón. Hapoel, who coming into the game had collected just a single point, had nothing to lose and occasionally broke out quickly with their creative wide players. Atlético lined up with the eleven that we’ve seen before in the Europa League, as Diego Simeone took the opportunity to rest some key players with our upcoming games against Sevilla and Real Madrid in mind.

The reserves started superbly and converted the first opportunity they created. Adrián intercepted a pass and quickly brought the ball forward. His cross was handled poorly by goalkeeper Edel and the loose ball was picked up by Emre, who kept his calm and enabled Raúl García to score. RG8′s strike bouncing in off the crossbar only increased the beauty of Adrián’s dribble and Emre’s assist.

Following the goal, Raúl almost immediately created a second, but referee Martin Hansson allowed a strong push from behind on the midfielder and waived off Atleti’s penalty claims.

Unlike the eleven teams that got beat in our previous eleven Europa League games, Hapoel didn’t sit back and nearly equalized when Maman’s header hit the side netting. Despite the low attendance numbers, the teams decided to go at the game in full speed and Raúl García nearly scored again at the other end. And in the 19th minute the midfielder combined with Sílvio to set up a huge opportunity for Adrián, but the Perfect7′s finish wasn’t as flawless as his nickname would suggest as he shot straight at Edel.

After the opening twenty minutes the game calmed down, but both teams did have good chances shortly before the break. Hapoel’s offensive midfielder Ben Haim easily skipped past Sílvio and Cata Díaz, but was then forced out wide by Jorge Pulido who did well to anticipate on the play. At the other end Edel had all kinds of trouble to stop Emre’s blast, but he did manage to get a hand on Diego Costa’s follow up.

Despite the slim margin Atleti seemed to take their foot off the gas in the second half and Hapoel were given some opportunities from longe range. Right back Pantsil just missed the target after Vermouth had seen his shot blocked, while Sergio Asenjo was later called to action to deny Hapoel the equalizer.

The second half wasn’t nearly as attractive as the first had been, but the game improved after Koke’s introduction for Atlético. He enabled Adrián to score, but the forward missed another big opportunity and failed to get his header on target. Koke himself claimed a penalty in the added time, but Hansson again ignored Atleti’s calls. A few minutes before the end Edel did well to block shots by Raúl García and Mario Suárez, to keep the score at 1-0.

The other game in Group B of the Europa League between Académica and Viktoria Plzen ended in a 1-1 tie with both sides scoring a penalty. Atlético now lead with 12 points from five games and a draw in our final game against Viktoria will be enough to qualify as top of the group.

Line-up: Asenjo; Sílvio, Cata Díaz, Pulido, Cisma; Mario, Emre; Adrián, Raúl García, Cebolla Rodríguez (“87 Pedro); and Diego Costa (“59 Koke).

Goals: 1-0 Raúl García (“8)

Simeone: "We have taken a very important step forward"

The Argentine coach highlighted the strength of depth in his squad in qualifying for the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League

Atletico Madrid sealed their place in the next round of the Europa League by defeating Hapoel Tel-Aviv by a goal to nil and Diego Pablo Simeone, the Atletico coach who marked his 50th game with victory had this to say in the press conference eafter the game "The most important thing is that we began the match playing well, we got an early goal and made them change the way they played. We did not have the aggressiveness and intensity necessary in the final third to get the goal and close the game. In the second half we had a little more possession, but we missed the killer touch at the other end," he said.

"We have taken a very important step because we are in the knockout stages. We understood that we had to give minutes to many players who do not play very often and, at the same time respect the opponent and it is these players who have given us a place in the next phase. I think this situation is beneficial for everyone," said Simeone.

The coach of Atletico Madrid spoke highly of Adrian: "He is playing well, just missing the goals at the minute, he played very well and the goals will come for him." he said.

Raúl García: "Best of all is the benefit to the team"

The former Osasuna player scored against Hapoel at the Calderon

Raul Garcia praised the victory against Hapoel Tel Aviv. "We wanted to take the game to the,, playing at home, we were favorites and our goal was to qualify from the group," he said. "We are a team that has to enforce ourselves wherever we play and the goal is obviously to get the three points," said the Atletico man.

Raul Garcia also talked about the next game against Viktoria Plzen, the last game in the group stage of the Europa League: "It will be like the first leg at the Calderon. Obviously, they have to take chances as they will need to win to get through. They will risk more than they did here and it will be difficult."

The former Osasuna player highlighted the work of the whole team over individual performances. "All the players are doing things right. We know that you have to take the minutes and, individually, I try to my do. Best of all is the benefit to the team," he said.

Pulido: "We showed today that we were only thinking about this game"

The youth played in Atletico's victory against Hapoel

Jorge Pulido attended the media after the win against Hapoel, a game which saw them seal qualification. Atletico's work is reflected in the results and leaves the changing room satisfied with the win. "We did todays job. Now we’re thinking about this weekend," said the youth.

Hapoel's visit could have been a banana skin inthe Calderón against a team with nothing to play for, but Atletico did not relax at any time. "We had to play with our intensity and will now think about Sunday's game. We are very happy. The objective was the three points and we’ve got them. It's a good result and we’ll go to the Czech Republic for the final game " he summarised.

On December 6th, Atletico will play for the first place in Group B of the Europa League against Viktoria Plzen". We must continue this streak and pick up three points. If we have a bad result it will put them ahead so we'll go for the win, if we can not win the draw should do. Avoiding playing against the sides knocked out of the champions league is important. We aspire to the maximum. We should be looking forward and hopefully we can repeat what happened last year, " concluded the player raised in the ranks of Club.

Atletico confirm their place in the knockout stage

The twelfth consecutive victory at the Calderon in Europe • Raul Garcia's goal in the 7th minute was the difference

Atletico are in the knockout stages. Simeone’s men picked up a narrow victory at the Vicente Calderon which sees them qualify from their group in the UEFA Europa League ahead of the last game against Plzen. Raul Garcia's goal in the 7th minute was the difference and allowed the Calderón to witness the twelfth consecutive victory of their team in European competition.

The aim of Simeone’s men was to put in a good perfoomance and seal qualification from the group. Atletico started strong and only took two minutes to test the opposition keeper Apoula with a high shot from Raul Garcia.

The opening goal was long in coming and it was Raul Garcia that got it when Adrian picked up the ball on the right, the Spaniard beat the defender and played in Emre, the Turkish played the ball to Raul Garcia who put his side ahead with a powerful shot that nestled in the visitors goal after hitting the crossbar.

The goal had come early but Simeone insisted that his men carried on. Hapoel came back after the initial spell of pressure and had a great chance in the 12th minute with a header from Maman who hit theside netting. Diego Costa replied in the penalty area with a shot that fizzed off the Brazilians boots.

The second half began with a different air. Hapoel, mathematically eliminated, decided to go up for an equalizer. Asenjo, hadn’t been called upon up to this point stuck out a foot in the 56th minute to deny the visitors. As in the first half, the visitors coming close awakened Atletico and Raul Garcia almost got his second goal on the stroke of 60 minutes.

As the minutes progressed, the home side began to dominate Hapoel. The game was played entirely in the Israelis half with Adrian and Koke involved in most things. In the 71st minute a combination of both end with a shot on goal which did not find the net.

The game entered the final minutes and a header by Pantsil reminded the home side that the visitors were still inthe game. It was the last chance as Atletico secure a spot in the knockout. Leading Group B ahead of the final match against Viktoria.
