Miranda: "If we want to be up there in the league, we have to pick up all three points"

"Granada will fight a lot and it will be a tough match"

Joao Miranda was sincere about Sunday's game against Granada. The central defender recognized that "the three points against Granada are the same as against any other team," so he made it clear that Atletico are motivated to continue their winning ways.

Miranda said in the press conference that "they are the same three points as against Getafe, we lost them in Valencia. If we want to be up in the league, we have to win these three very important points. We are convinced that we will play well and we'll try to get the three points."

Following the same line as the rest of the squad, Miranda is not thinking beyond the game against Granada. "I repeat that the three points are the same as in other games. Granada will fight a lot and it will be a very difficult game. We want to play well and get the three points."

Regarding the injury that has kept him working on the sidelines for a few days, said: "I'm fully recovered. It will not be a problem and hopefully I’ll have a good game and help my teammates in Granada ".

As for the figure of Falcao, Miranda is very clear. "Falcao is a great player and I hope he stays and helps us a lot," he said.

The safety of the defensive unit is one of the keys to this great spell for Atletico. Miranda speaks highly of the group "security is not a matter of only the defensive players like Godin and myself, nor the fullbacks, the whole team is helping a lot in the defensive systems.”

Simeone: "The beginning was strong and enthusiastic, but now we’re looking at the game against Granada"

"They’re a dangerous team who’ve not got the points they deserves"

Diego Pablo Simeone appeared before the media in midweek as usual when there is no commitment or European Cup in between. The Atletico coach spoke of the match against Granada and the good start his team has had. The coach does not deviate from the recorded speech of going game by game, and doing so speaks about the vital meeting next Sunday in Los Cármenes.

For starters, Simeone attaches great importance to Sunday's game because "we are always thinking about the next day. We always think about the game ahead.Granada is a team that the other day had a great game against Betis. They had a very good match against Athletic, have regained some guys like Benitez, who had been playing in recent times and will surely grown after the success he had in Seville.”

He notes that "I think that apart from the game against Academica, we have always reflected in the team's identity. This team is work, commitment, and playing as a unit."

On the expectation that Granada have generated,   the Atletico coach said "it's a team that does not have the points they deserves. They work collectively and with the return of Benitez they’re dangerous down the left. They have two brave frontmen. In the middle they’ve got Iriney and Rico, who know the league very well. All this add up to a dangerous team. They did well against Atheltic and against Betis. I guess we will find the same team that beat Betis. We look for places where they can possibly do harm."

As for Falcao, Simeone is very clear. "Everything that happens to Falcao makes me happy because I’ve known him since he was a boy. Before the final in Bucharest we discussed with him because there was a possibility that he could go because he is an important player. We are talking about one of the best in the world and it is normal that if you have world's best, other people will be looking on. Falcao knows well and deserves everything good that happens to him," he said.

As regards the international break this midweek, the Atletico coach said "it is important for federations. It's a strange week. Thank God we have many players in the selections and that creates a good feeling in the camp. It is an important moment for the coaches and federations."

About the rotations, he was clear in stating that "I have to explain. I have to assemble the team to win and hope that those who are playing do well for the sake of the future of the club. I do not stop to explain or understand some situations. What the club needs is to be competitive in all three competitions and I think we're taking it in the best way."

Match preview: Granada vs. Atlético
Atleti travel to Andalusia in search of their fourth away win in La Liga this season

Match Previews - Posted on November 18, 2012 by Martin Rosenow - No Comments

Atlético hope to avoid the so-called ‘FIFA Virus’ when they head south into Andalusia to take on Granada at the Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes.

Kick-off on Sunday is set for 19:45 CET.

Following their 2-0 win last weekend over Getafe at the Vicente Calderón, 11 Rojiblancos joined their respective national teams for the latest round of international friendlies.

Regular Atleti starters Falcao, Juanfran, Arda and Diego Godín all saw extensive action in their countries’ shirts, but fortunately returned to Madrid unscathed.

In Arda’s case, this is somewhat of a minor miracle. The Turk seemingly more often than not tends to come back to the squad banged up and unavailable immediately after national side duty.

The Turkish playmaker’s availability is obviously great news for a Diego Simeone dead set on making sure his men achieve their Champions League objective, as evidenced by his heavy rotational policy thus far when it comes to midweek European competition.

Los Rojiblancos will be after their fourth away win of the present La Liga campaign, having succumbed to defeat for the first time this season a fortnight ago in Valencia–the club’s only league loss in 2012/13.

A triumph at the Los Cármenes could offer us up to a 12-point cushion in the long-and-drawn-out race for a Champions League spot when it is all said and done this weekend, with Málaga being held to a draw against Osasuna in Pamplona on Saturday and Betis facing a tough derby clash versus city rivals Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Sunday.

Though our opponents are currently in critical condition just one point safe of the relegation zone and in 16th place in the standings, right-back Juanfran refused to downplay the difficulty of this game, admitting that Atleti have to play “a very good game” if they want to reel in all three points.

“We consider this match our most important of the season,” the Spain international told reporters on Saturday.

“We are under that mentality that every game is important and that they can all be decisive when it comes to achieving our objective.

“It’s a very important match, one of those that leaves a mark and serves as a guide to determine where you are at the end of the season.”

There were no surprise inclusions or exclusions in ‘El Cholo’s match selection for this trip, with Joel, Domingo Cisma, Pulido and Sìlvio being left behind in the Spanish capital.

Curiously, El Graná have had less luck at home this season than they’ve had on their travels. Only five of their eleven points have been secured at their ground.

Juan Antonio Anquela’s men stopped the bleeding last Friday when they upset Betis 2-1 in Sevilla. Granada had lost four straight matches prior to that encounter.

The former Alcorcón boss earned himself an extended stay at the helm of the Andalusian outfit, but a third consecutive loss at home on Sunday may very well spell his demise.

The injured Diego Mainz, Jaime Romero, Fran Rico and Hassan Yebda will not be at our hosts’ disposal, while Anquela opted to leave Floro Flores and Lucena off the squad for this bout through tactical decision.

Atlético match selection:
Goalkeepers: Asenjo, Courtois
Defenders: Godín, Filipe, Cata Díaz, Juanfran, Miranda
Midfielders: Mario Suárez, Tiago, Koke, Raúl García, Arda, Cebolla, Gabi, Emre
Forwards: Adrián, Falcao, Diego Costa

Granada match selection:

Defenders: Nyom, Diakhaté, Íñigo López, Siqueira, Juanma Ortíz, Brayan Angulo, Borja Gómez
Midfielders: Moisés Hurtado, Brahimi, Iriney, Orellana, Dani Benítez, Torje, Mikel Rico

The red and white aftermath: Match Day 12
Atleti get off to best league start ever after edging out Granada in tough away bout

General - Posted on November 19, 2012 by Martin Rosenow - 2 Comments

Atletico got three points in Granada to stay second in the League Championship. A very elaborate victory against an opponent who made things very difficult for them. "We knew what was going to happen in the first half and could not control it. I think the first half Granada played well, with aggressiveness, intensity and winning the second balls, creating difficulties for left and up the middle. Without actually having clear scoring situations, but they looked a top team in the development of the game" analyzed the Argentinean.

The second 45 minutes were clearly dominated by the visitors "We talked in the changing room and we understood what we had to do. The presence of Diego Costa led us to have more chances to go out and fight the second ball in a match that had looked to play that way. From there came the quality of players like Arda and Koke or who moved to win the match" said the coach.

In his appearance before the media Simeone noted the great improvement of his players after a difficult first half. "The reaction I had from the team in the second half is the most important thing that I took from today. When a team understands it's wrong, you have to react and react as we did is a step forward as a team. The reaction of the second half was an important step for us, "he said.

After stumbling in the Mestalla, Atletico came back from Granada having picked up another victory away from Calderon and keep up with FC Barcelona and other rivals coming from behind. "The way the team work, how to understand the situation and the timing of the match led us take three very important points for the championship," stated the coach.

Finally, the Atletico coach praised his opponents. "Granada made it very complicated but in the second half the team reacted. Playing a second half like that and reacting as they did is very important. They are a very dangerous team that is not having the luck the deserve on the pitch." concluded Simeone.

La Liga: Granada 0 – 1 Atlético
Atleti grind out victory on the road courtesy of Arda goal

Match Reports - Posted on November 18, 2012 by Derek Maaijen - 5 Comments

In what was one of Atlético’s poorest performances of the season, the Rojiblancos showed true grit by grinding out a victory against Granada.

For most of the game the Andalusians were the better side, but Arda Turan’s goal after an hour of play decided the match in Atleti’s favour.

Atleti weren’t themselves in the first half and it was Granada who showed the aggression, spirit and focus that usually distinguishes Simeone’s men. The home side nearly profited from mistakes by Juanfran and Miranda, but Siquiera and later Brahimi were unable to capitalise on the errors.

Granada’s offensive quartet of Dani Benítez, Brahimi, Torje and top scorer El-Arabi pressured well, and the latter headed just wide from a free kick in the 10th minute.

Atlético’s midfield was hardly involved, although Raúl García did put goalkeeper Toño to the test with a low drive. A few minutes later the ‘keeper again was called to action when Diego Godín nearly scored a header.

But besides two shots from long range by Mario and Falcao, it was all about Granada in the first half. Thibaut Courtois saved his team when he denied El-Arabi from close range.

The Colchoneros again evaded danger when Torje hit the woodwork. After clearing a corner kick, El Graná broke out quickly and if it hadn’t been for Arda Turan’s deflection, then the Romanian’s shot would have been successful instead of smashing against the post.

Possibly the most curious moment of the game came at the start of the second half, when fresh sub Diego Costa went back into the dressing room to look for his jersey, meanwhile leaving his team-mates a man down at the start of the half.

The Brazilian would soon be forgiven though, because he played a big role in Atlético’s goal in the 61st minute. Costa passed the ball back to another substitute, Koke, who delivered a fine cross at the second post for Arda to slide in.

Atleti immediately followed up the goal with another big chance, but Radamel Falcao hit the side netting. At the other end Dani Benítez wasted a good opportunity after failing to control the ball, giving Thibaut Courtois the opportunity to intervene.

The undeserved goal clearly upset Granada, as the solid defence suddenly started to reveal cracks. Shortly after going ahead Atleti created big opportunities for Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao, but both strikers were unfortunate in their finishing. The Colombian has now failed to score since the attempt on his life by Roberto Soldado in Valencia, and on Sunday night seemed to have lost his killer instinct. Perhaps telling of his form, he missed a sitter in the added time after Filipe Luís had delivered the ball on a platter.

Before that Koke had also missed a big opportunity to double our lead, which could have been costly considering that Atleti played with 10 men since the 71st minute when Mario Suárez received his marching orders for picking up his second booking.

But besides a header by Orellana which just missed the goal, Atleti managed to hang on – perhaps defending stronger and more focussed with 10 than with 11. The victory was hard-fought and perhaps undeserved, but our 10th win in 12 games assures us that we’re going into the derby at least two points ahead of Real Madrid, no matter the result of next week’s heated clash with Sevilla.

Line-up: Courtois; Juanfran, Godín, Miranda, Filipe; Mario, Gabi, Arda (“73 Tiago), Raúl García (“59 Koke); Adrián (“46 Diego Costa) and Falcao.

Goals: 0-1 Arda (“61)

Stamp of authority in Granada

Atletico win in the Nuevo Los Cármenes, Turan with his fourth goal in the league this season

Atletico again proved its strength by winning a tough match against Granada. A goal by Arda Turan after good work collectively gave all three points to Atletico who were the better team in the second half and had ample opportunities to increase their lead despite playing over 25 minutes with a man less.

There was big party atmosphere in Los Cármenes. A stadium receiving the second placed team in the league table. Aware of the difficulty, fans gave the impetus to their team at the start of the match. The Andalusians started strongly thanks to the actions of Dani Benítez, Siqueira and El Arabi but Atletico managed to hold on and grew in to the game with Raul Garcia's header forcing the home goalkeeper in to a save.

The visiting goalkeeping Courtois was called in to action after 30 minutes, the Belgian saved from El Arabi a few yards from goal, the Moroccan tried to open the scoring but could beat the big Atletico stopper.

After 45 minutes the score remained goalless after good work from both keepers. Both were in very confident mood until the 56th minute when Toño was finally picking the ball out of his own goal. Diego Costa picked up a ball and picked out Koke who delivered a delicious ball to the far post where Arda turned it home. Atletico opened the scoring and what a valuable goal it was.

Then Simeone's side came to life and created more chances on goal, Falcao came close with a shot from the right that hit the side netting. Diego Costa did well after good individual work and Tiger failed to connect well from a cross from Juanfran.

The clash was being dominated by Atletico until Mario Gonzalez Gonzalez was shown a second yellow card for handball with 20 minutes left to play. The numerical superiority gave a moral bostto Granada, but the superiority did not translate on the field, with Atletico continuing to create the most clear cut chances in the dying stages. The rojiblancos keep the pressure on at the top of the league, sat in second place with 31 points, three behind the leader.
