Germany 1-0 Portugal: Gomez gets the nod upfront, and nods in the only goal
June 10, 2012

The starting line-ups

The quietest of Euro 2012’s four games so far ended with a narrow German victory.

Jogi Löw had a few decisions to make – Mario Gomez, rather than Miroslav Klose, started upfront and Mats Hummels was picked over Per Mertesacker in the centre of defence. At right-back, Jerome Boateng played up against Cristiano Ronaldo, despite rumours that Lars Bender would be played out of position there.

There were no surprises in Paulo Bento’s team selection. Miguel Veloso played deep in midfield contrary to reports that Custodio would get a game, and Helder Postiga was the centre-forward.

This was a low-key, cagey match that never seemed likely to produce many goals.

Formation battle

Portugal were 4-3-3 and sat deep in their own half with three relatively defensive-minded midfielders, and rarely looked to break forward other than with the two wingers. Their out-ball was always either to Ronaldo moving inside from the left, or longer balls to Nani down the right. Postiga was rarely involved.

Germany’s shape was the usual 4-2-3-1, with Mesut Özil drifting from side to side, and the two holding midfielders, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira, taking it in turns to go forward. The full-backs stayed relatively deep, probably fearing that they’d leave space in behind for Ronaldo and Nani to break into if they attacked. When Ronaldo did recievethe ball on the run, Boateng stayed narrow and showed him wide.

Midfield battle

The key battle in this game was Özil against Veloso: Özil naturally plays right-of-centre, Veloso naturally plays left-of-centre. Veloso tried to stick tightly to Özil, and although his tracking was generally very good, Özil is just so clever at finding pockets of space in the channels and on the flanks, and his constant lateral drifts were often too good for Veloso. The Portuguese midfielder was reluctant to move a long way from his designated central holding position, for fear that other players would move into that zone and cause problems between the lines.

Özil’s movement is generally lateral anyway, but with Veloso scared outside the width of the penalty box, Özil’s passing chalkboards were the definition of a central winger (nominally playing as a central playmaker, but never actually receiving the ball in the centre of the pitch). Germany struggled to create clear-cut chances, but their best moves in the first half generally came after good work from Özil.

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08D5S.png

Elsewhere in the midfield zone, Meireles and Moutinho tracked the runs of Khedira and Schweinsteiger. As the German duo moved forward in turns and switched from right to left, Meireles and Moutinho were happy to be drawn out of their natural position, as long as their opponents didn’t find space when venturing forward. Khedira and Schweinsteiger didn’t want to over-commit, the Portuguese midfielders were concentrated solely on breaking up play, and so the first half was something of a stand-off.

Portugal chances

Portugal relied on counter-attacks and set-pieces. On breaks, they got the ball to the wingers well, but Ronaldo and Nani couldn’t produce a moment of magic to get into goalscoring positions. From a set-piece, Portugal came very close when Pepe hit the bar following a corner.

Bento’s side will be criticised for playing in a negative manner, but looking at Portugal’s side logically, it’s difficult for Bento to justify playing an attacking game. They have no number ten or a real creative influence to break down a packed defence, and their best bet is relying upon the wingers on the break – that’s the only way Ronaldo and Nani will be able to compensate for the lack of a prolific striker and a creative midfielder.

Germany crosses

Besides, no-one is surprised when sides play this way against Spain – it’s standard practice. Therefore, it’s hardly shocking that teams will play this way against Germany, a side widely considered to be very close to the level of Spain.

The difference, however, is that while Spain are narrow and often lack a traditional number nine, Germany have a prolific central striker in Mario Gomez. With Portugal’s midfield three staying narrow, Germany were sometimes allowed space on the flanks to get crosses in, and although the goal came from a deflected cross and can hardly be attributed to a piece of genius tactical thinking, the mere fact that Germany were happy enough to centre the ball demonstrates one reason why they’re more of an all-round threat than Spain. Gomez had also threatened from a couple of earlier deliveries from wide, then nearly connected with a low centre from Thomas Muller minutes later.

Perhaps Portugal even opened up too much. In the ten minutes before Gomez’s goal they’d become more offensive, playing higher up the pitch, pressing more, getting Joao Moutinho into space between the lines (his pass to Ronaldo looked like it had created the best chance of the game, but Boateng got a superb block in) and pushing Meireles forward to the edge of the box. Germany pounced when Portugal had finally started to play football.

1-0

At 1-0 down, Bento decided to bring on Silvestre Varela for Meireles (Nelson Oliveira had already replaced Postiga upfront) and Portugal went to a loose 4-2-3-1 system, with plenty of movement from the three nominal wingers behind Oliveira. And, with an extra attacking player, Portugal played very good football – there were sharp combinations, movement into channels, an extra dribbler to run at the German defence, and much more urgency in the play. Germany defended well – Hummels in particular – but needed to make some desperate blocks at the back, and Manuel Neuer was also forced into action.

Portugal played ultra-defensive well, and they played all-out-attack well. It was the transition stage that seemed to cost them the game.

Conclusion

This wasn’t a complex match. Portugal started the game playing reactively, Germany were patient in the number of players they pushed forward. Only Özil’s movement, and his battle with Miguel Veloso, provided tactical interest.

Löw’s decision to start with Gomez just about paid off – although he seemed to be preparing Klose just before the switch. Klose still seems a better fit because of his combinations with the other attackers in high-speed moves, but if future opponents are going to park the bus against Germany but give them time in wide positions, Gomez might be the better option.

2012-06-10

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/germany-portugal.jpg

Germany 2-1 Holland: German flexibility outwits the static Dutch midfield
June 14, 2012

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/germany-holland.jpg
The starting line-ups

The second excellent Group B game of the night, and another encounter decided by superiority in one particular zone.
Jogi Löw continued with the same starting XI that defeated Portugal on Saturday.

Despite widespread predictions that Holland would change at least one of their front four, Bert van Marwijk’s selection featured only one change, with Ron Vlaar dropping out of the side now Joris Mathijsen was fit to start. Clearly, van Marwijk believed that the majority of Holland’s play against Denmark was good – it was just the finishing that let them down.

Germany were much the better side here – they were more comfortable on the ball, their movement was better and they played at a quicker tempo. It was something of a surprise to see them hanging on towards the end of the game, having been so superior in the first half.

Wide positions

Whereas the earlier Group B game was contested on the flanks, the battles in wide zones here were quiet, with the full-backs coming out on top. Ibrahim Afellay had another disappointing game, and Jerome Boateng again deserves great credit for his defensive performance, having been unsure of his place in the side before the tournament (although he picked up a second yellow card, and will miss the game against Denmark). On the other side, Philipp Lahm played Arjen Robben wonderfully – Robben was predictable, always coming inside onto his left foot, but Lahm had extra knowledge from Bayern, and Robben only succeeded with one of his five attempts to dribble past an opponent.

At the other end, Gregory van der Wiel against Lukas Podolski was something of a no-score draw – it’s difficult to remember either significantly involved in the play – while Thomas Muller was probably the wide player who looked most dangerous (mainly with a couple of crosses towards Mario Gomez) against the inexperienced Jetro Willems – although the Dutch left-back certainly didn’t have a poor game.

Central midfield

This game was all about the midfield, and the contrast between the two systems. Holland were very structured – Nigel de Jong was retained alongside Mark van Bommel, while Wesley Sneijder stayed high up the pitch, more like a second striker than an attacking midfielder. Holland were effectively outnumbered 3 v 2 in the middle, but this wasn’t necessarily a problem if they sat deep, kept their positions, and forced Germany wide.

Holland’s trouble inevitably started from the movement of the fabulous Mesut Ozil, who drifted towards the right of the pitch in the first half, combining with Muller. As the deepest-lying Dutch midfielder, de Jong generally followed him – which left Mark van Bommel covering a large space of the pitch in front of the Dutch defence.

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08Y3R.png

Third runner

Van Bommel then had to pick up the second runner – either Sami Khedira or Bastian Schweinsteiger. But the great value of Germany’s fluidity and bravery in midfield was demonstrated by the fact that the other player didn’t merely stay deep and pick up Sneijder. Germany left him to the centre-backs, generally keeping one full-back in a defensive position to maintain three defenders at the back if the ball was lost. That meant they had a third midfield runner.

The first goal highlighted this brilliantly. De Jong started off marking Ozil in a central zone, but ends up being dragged to a left-back position. Van Bommel tracks Khedira, who also moves towards that side of the pitch. Therefore, the entire central midfield zone has been opened up for Schweinsteiger – with Sneijder miles away. Schweinsteiger gets the ball, and slips in Gomez, who spun and finished excellently. This was an isolated incident, but it had been coming.

For the second goal, something similar happened. De Jong moved with Ozil towards the left-back position and van Bommel had erroneously been tracking Khedira when Schweinsteiger was higher up the pitch. Schweinsteiger was then free to receive Ozil’s pass, and played in Gomez again. In fact, Schweinsteiger only passed to Gomez twice in the first half, and both were assists.

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08vdP.png

Holland changes

Holland had to adjust, and van Marwijk brought on Rafael van der Vaart for van Bommel, which helped Holland connect the midfield and attack. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar replaced Afellay, with the Schalke striker playing upfront as van Persie moved to the flank, switching around with Robben.

Much in the opening game, the change didn’t initially seem to give Holland much extra threat. Their good play in the first half came when van Persie and Robben combined on the right, or when van Persie’s movement (often in behind Mats Hummels, maybe hoping Hummels would be drawn to Sneijder) allowed him a chance after a ball from the centre of the pitch. These combinations were no longer evident, and for the first part of the second half, Germany were comfortable.

Dutch switch

But then, van Marwijk switched van Persie and Sneijder. The former was now a number ten, the latter moving inside from the left. Now, there were some decent moments – although there was still little cohesion from the Dutch front four, and every bit of good play was down to individual moments. Sneijder had a powerful effort blocked by Boateng after Robben beat his man for the first time. Then Sneijder cut inside from the left and shot just wide of the far post. Van Persie, meanwhile, created a goal out of nothing by coming deep to get the ball and firing in from outside of the box. Holland were back in the game, but through individuals rather than the structure of the side.

Germany didn’t defend well in the second half. Compared to at the World Cup two years ago, their shape wasn’t impressive – the second bank of four was slow to form and Holland found space out wide. It was surprising Löw didn’t use his substitutes earlier, to give extra energy to the side, and perhaps some more defensive protection.
But Holland didn’t do enough to merit a point. Their pressing was terrible – the front four or five would close down high up the pitch, then the defence and de Jong would stay on the edge of their own box. Germany played through the first ‘line’ easily, then held the ball, and held on for the win.

Conclusion

This was the perfect demonstration of how a flexible midfield duo can outwit the opposition. Germany were brave, and risked being caught on the break by leaving Sneijder free between the lines, but the alternate forward runs from Schweinsteiger and Khedira confused van Bommel, while de Jong was distracted by Ozil’s usual selfless off-the-ball movement to the flanks.

In more general terms, this was all about cohesion. Germany did everything together – they pressed as a unit, defended as a unit, and broke through with integrated movement and clever passing. Holland relied on individuals, while the defensive shape of the side was poor – quite damning, considering van Marwijk went for the defensive option of two holding midfielders. Germany aren’t mathematically through, Holland aren’t mathematically eliminated, and this was only a one-goal win, but the difference in quality was huge.

2012-06-17

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/germany-holland.jpg

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08Y3R.png

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08vdP.png

2012-06-10

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/germany-portugal.jpg

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08D5S.png

2012-06-14

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/germany-holland.jpg

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08Y3R.png

http://tf-chalkboards.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images/08vdP.png

Germany v Greece preview
June 22, 2012

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/gergre.jpg
Potential starting line-ups

On paper, this is the most one-sided of the four quarter-finals. Germany qualified the most impressively of the eight quarter-finalists, while Greece squeezed through with just four points.

Team news

Greek coach Fernando Santos is without two players because of suspension. Giorgos Karagounis is absent from the centre of midfield, while left-back Jose Holebas is also unavailable, though might not have started anyway.

Jogi Löw doesn’t have such problems – in fact, he has Jerome Boateng back after a ban – but reports in today’s German newspapers suggest he’s set to make radical changes in the final third. Most importantly, it seems certain that Miroslav Klose will start instead of Mario Gomez upfront. On the flanks, Andre Schurrle is challenging Lukas Podolski for a starting place, while Marco Reus could play instead of Thomas Muller. It would be a surprise if Löw changed three of his front four, and probably unnecessary considering their 100% record so far.

Greek left / German right and midfield battle

A key area is the Greek left-back zone, the area where they’ve looked vulnerable throughout the tournament. Holebas being out of contention isn’t a significant blow, as Giorgios Tzavelas performed well there against Russia, but he’s likely to be faced with two players – either Muller or Reus, plus Mesut Ozil moving across to that side of the pitch. Tzavelas won’t receive much help from Giorgos Samaras, who will concentrate on marking Boateng, so it’s likely that Grigoris Makos will have to move across the pitch with Ozil.

Makos will worry about leaving the Greek midfield understaffed, and running into the same problems Holland encountered. The German midfield is highly flexible, of course, and though the runs of Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger will worry Greece, they should be defending with three central midfielders at all times. Therefore, while the movement and unpredictability could catch them out, they shouldn’t be merely outnumbered, as Holland were.

Santos could format his midfield in two ways – play Kostas Katsouranis high up the pitch with two holders behind, or move Katsouranis deeper and play Giannis Maniatis as the highest midfielder. Maniatis is much more energetic – it’s a question of whether Santos wants that energy used in a purely defensive sense, or in a more ambitious manner.

Elsewhere

Those two battlezones – the Greek left-back area and the centre of midfield – seem the key areas to watch. But there should be some interesting, well-matched battles on the wings. Vasilis Torosidis will take on Podolski or Schurrle in a quick, energetic battle. Higher up the flank, Philipp Lahm will push back Dimitris Salpingidis, though needs to be wary of Salpingidis’ clever movement, both in behind the defence on the break, and into more central positions behind Schweinsteiger.

Boateng against Samaras is essentially a centre-back versus centre-forward battle in a wide zone. Boateng should try and push Samaras towards his own goal, as the Greek forward can be quite effective with his hold-up play in wide positions.

Klose?

But Löw’s apparent decision to play Klose ahead of Gomez will probably be the key feature. Löw is a huge fan of Klose, and many think he would have started this competition upfront were he not an injury doubt, but dropping Gomez after three goals in three games is a huge decision.

It seems that the choice is purely tactical, rather than because of fitness reasons. Klose is a more mobile player with clever movement and would allow Germany to change the positions of their front four more readily (his understanding with Ozil is particularly impressive). That is probably in Löw’s mind, and he wants to outwit the physical Greek centre-back duo with a nippy player, rather than play into their hands with a big striker like Gomez.

However, Löw risks allowing the Greeks to defend deep and narrow. Part of Germany’s brilliance in the group stage was that they had Gomez on the pitch to offer something different, so when Portugal tried to park the bus against them to crowd out the creative players, Germany could use Gomez as a more direct option. Instead, it seems, he’ll be a plan B.

For Greece, there remains a lack of drive going forward, unless Sotiris Ninis gets a surprise start on the right. Greece, predictably, will rely upon set-pieces.

Germany 4-2 Greece: near-total dominance

June 22, 2012

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/2222222.jpg
The starting line-ups

Germany thrashed a poor Greece side to progress to the semi-finals with ease.

Jogi Low, as widely reported before the game, changed three of his front four. Mesut Ozil remained, but Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle and Miroslav Klose replaced Thomas Muller, Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez.

Fernando Santos was without Giorgos Karagounis from the centre of midfield, so Grigoris Makis played instead. Sotiris Ninis played on the right, with Dmitri Salpingidis upfront.

Greece tried to soak up pressure, but simply weren’t good enough defensively and Germany constantly created chances.

German approach

The most interesting feature of the first few minutes was the German pressing. They stood off the two Greek centre-backs without the ball, maintaining a good shape near the halfway line. However, as soon as the ball was played into the full-backs, Germany sprung into life and pressed suddenly and ferociously. This approach worked well throughout the game, as Greece struggled to put passes together and launch counter-attacks. The centre-backs weren’t good enough on the ball to distribute it usefully, though Sokratis Papastathopoulos went on a couple of charges forward.

The introduction of Schurrle and Reus made Germany more energetic, quicker and more dynamic with the ball. Reus and Ozil swapped passes nicely and occasionally changed positions, with Reus motoring towards goal purposefully and dangerously. On the other side, Schurrle’s direct play was more obvious when he got the ball, as he cut inside and shot quickly, though this became a little obvious and many of his attempts were blocked.

Greek approach

Greece played this game very cautiously. The back four rarely moved forward, with the full-backs pressed back effectively by Reus and Muller.

The Greek midfield was interesting, however. Kostas Katsouranis played an odd shuttling role – when Greece had the ball (or hit goal-kicks down the pitch towards the forwards) he was the highest midfielder, but when Germany had long spells of possession he often became the deepest of the trio.

But Greece didn’t have any great structure or shape to their midfield in general – Ozil pulled them out of position, while the runs from Sami Khedira often caught them by surprise. Germany simply attacked from so many different angles, and at such great speed, that Greece’s reactive football couldn’t cope – they were trying to react to so many different things. Ninis should have defended better for Philipp Lahm’s goal, but this came at the end of constant pressure, and Germany should have been ahead before having worked their way into the penalty box repeatedly.

Second half

If there’s one thing Santos has done well in this tournament, it’s been half-time changes (although the inevitable question is why he can’t get things right from the start). Here, he brought on Theo Gekas upfront with Salpingidis moving to the right to the right. Central midfielder Georgios Fotakis replaced left-back Giorgos Tzavelas due to injury, with Maniatis going to right-back, and Vasilis Torosidis switching sides.

Germany seemed to drop the tempo after half-time, almost as if they were planning on keeping it 1-0. However, while it’s difficult to say that the Greek goal was coming, or that they merited it on the balance of play, they had put together a decent break before the goal, when Gekas and Samaras combined.

The goal came when Salpingidis, now on his natural position on the right flank, got the ballto feet and was in a position to run with it, something that never happened in the first half. He crossed for Samaras to tap in. However, it was more interesting that the goal came from a loose Schurrle pass – it wasn’t his first, and he was later the first German player to be removed. His sloppy passing might prevent him from starting the semi-final.

Germany run away with it

Greece angered Germany too early, though, and Low’s side stepped up the tempo and ended up winning the game at a canter. The second goal, from Khedira, demonstrated his ability to time runs into the both excellently from deep positions – something he’s done well throughout the tournament, probably outperforming the more established Schweinsteiger in the centre of the German midfield.

From then on, Ozil took over to turn in his finest performance of the tournament so far (though his poor finishing is often remarkable for such a good player). He provided the assist for Klose’s headed third from a free-kick he’d won himself out on the right, then was the man who provided the run shortly before Reus’ thumped fourth.

Greece eventually got a second to make the scoreline closer than it should have been, but really this was a mismatch and uninteresting tactically, aside from the different qualities the ‘new’ German attackers provided.

Conclusion

Germany were – put simply – too good. The changes Low made broadly worked well, giving a quicker feel to the German side, a good move against a slow, cumbersome Greek back four. Klose scored a fine header, but more importantly his movement and link-up play made Germany more fluid as a whole. With a more intelligent centre-forward and two more direct wingers, Ozil was the main man to benefit – and he played a part in all four goals. If Germany can get him constantly involved, they stand a great chance of winning Euro 2012.

Greece’s approach relied upon good penalty box defending, but too often they were sliced open easily. Their old weakness, a poor goalkeeper, was also obvious at various points. But Santos did well to get out of the group in the first place, and his approach tonight was probably the right one on paper. Ultimately, there’s no shame in losing heavily to a vastly superior side.

2012-06-23

http://i1.hoopchina.com.cn/blogfile/201206/23/13404107567158.jpg

http://i2.hoopchina.com.cn/blogfile/201206/23/134041076763403.png

http://i2.hoopchina.com.cn/blogfile/201206/23/134041077882871.png
