Interview with Gabriel Heinze
STRONG PRINCIPLES

ALTHOUGH HE COULD NOT PLAY THE LATEST TWO MATCHES OF THE SOUTH AMERICANQUALIFIERS DUE TO AN INJURY, THE REAL MADRID'SDEFENDER IS ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE NATIONAL TEAM. HE HAS ALWAYS FOLLOWED “THEROAD OF TRUTH AND HONESTY," AS HE EXPLAINS TO REFER TO THE CONTROVERSIALCONTRACT CANCELLATION WITH MANCHESTERUNITED. THIS IS JUST A MAN WHO HONESTLY EXPRESSES HIS FEELINGS.

“It's great to be back in Ezeiza Training Camp. I'm absolutely happy
to sport the National Team's stripes once again. It's a very special
feeling. I've known all these people for some years now. They work
hard all the year, sometimes without even being noticed. We have
always tried to be like a family, and we really are.”
These were the first words of Gabriel Iván Heinze in his interview with Fútbol
Argentino. His concepts clearly reflect what he feels every time
he is called up to sport the sky blue and white stripes. His words
and the look in his eyes also reflect the true simplicity learned in
Crespo, the town of Entre Ríosprovince where he was born. As a
result of this simplicity, he always feels grateful to football andtries
to acknowledge every little detail, as the hard work made by all
the employees in Ezeiza Training Camp. They always try to have
everything in perfect conditions for the Team.

Afterfour and a half years since your debut in the National
Team, how can you describe your role in the squad, considering
youwere almost unknown for most of the fans, and now you
area true leader?
I grew up day after day. I have made very short steps in my
evolution in the National Team, but always with determination. I've
always been aware of the huge responsibility of sporting these
colours. And I have always felt very happy about this. This is a
great privilege, since not many Argentine players can be part of
the National Team. So I try to give my best every time I'm called
up. I will focus on this until my last day in the squad.

Youare a leader now. Certainly, the relationship with other players,
especiallynewcomers, must be different from early times...
I don't want to call myself a leader. I leave that to others. Times havechanged. When I made my debut, there were great leaders in the National Team. Imay be one of them now, but these new players have amazing football skills. They play in the best teams of the world and have great quality. So, a leadercan give some piece of advice, but that's all. Young players are very good professionalsplaying at the highest level. Today, the National Team have
young players with wide experience.

Forsome time, there has been a demand on the National Team
forwinning a tournament. Do you think this adds some extra
pressureon players?
We have to live with this. Players are used to this, both in their local
squads and in the National Team. You must win because everybody wants youto win. You have to win, show a good performance and score as many goals aspossible. This is part of this game and it's also our choice, especiallyplaying in a squad with such a high level as the National Team. Pressure willalways be there. However, it can be a good influence, or a bad one. Personally,I feel ok with this. I like playing under pressure.

Inthe last two Preliminaries, Argentinamanaged to qualify before the end of the competition with almost nodifficulties. What do you think about these South American Qualifiers? Will itbe the same now?
Now, there are fewer differences among all representative
squads. However, Argentine players are true figures in the best
teams of the world, so this group has a special characteristic.
We have to look for a balance in every aspect. It would be great
to qualify before the end of the Preliminaries, but wehave to be
careful. We need to focus on one match at a time. We know that
each match will have its own difficulties, and we need to win.
Playing as visitors will certainly be hard.

Allrepresentative squads have an advantage when playing as hosts. Therefore, winning points as visitors will make the difference...
Exactly. Even players of lower level usually play better
at home, due to the support of fans, the fact of being
in their own country, and sometimes also because of
the weather conditions.

AlthoughSouth Africa 2010 is over two years away, what do you think about the future ofthe National Team in this next World Cup? Do you have great expectations?
(Heinze sighs and takes some seconds to answer, as if imagining the bestoutcome.)
I see a great future for us. Some of our players are less than 25
years old, and they have already played a World Cup and two Copa America. Also,80 percent of them are playing in the best teams of the world and have wideexperience...you cannot ask for anything else. We have to be confident, becausethe squad will reach the World Cup with these players in their best moment. That's why I see a great future for Argentina. We should also take intoaccount all the new players that can also be added to the squad.
One of those young new players with wide experience and stunning, unlimitedtalent is Lionel Messi, probably the ace of Alfio Basile's team. The player of Barcelona has quicklysparked off new hopes in fans. Many expectations are placed on this young boyregarding the future of the National Team.

Howcan you build up a group with such a special, decisive player?
Whatis the relationship with him?
There's no difference for us. In my case, I see no difference at
all in our daily work. Leo is like any other person; he enjoys the
same things that anybody else may enjoy. He's very humble,
and a good person. He doesn't feel he is different or special,
and that's why we all feel we are the same. Of course, we try to
give him some special care in the field. We know that he needs
some protection to be well-positioned and make the difference.
Therefore, we have to support him. However, the team cannot
be built just with Messi. We need all the players. And he's a very
simple boy. For me, he is not “the Messi” everybody talks about.
He's just the “Enano” (Dwarf), and that's great.

Gabriel Heinze does not only have a strongcharacter on the pitch.
He also had to face some difficult situations whichhe considered
unfair and improper. At those moments, he remainedfaithful to his
principles. The latest of those hard situations wasrelated to the
controversial cancellation of his contract withManchester United
before being transferred to Real Madrid.

Haveyou had problems due to your attitude and principles?
Yes, I've had many problems, but I'm more convinced than ever
about my decisions, since I've always followed the road of truth.
I don't like half measures. I want things to be clear. I may have
had many problems, but today I'm playing in other of the best
teams of the world. So, when you fight for your beliefsand your
principles... The truth is, I'm lucky to have been educated in this
way. I will always be grateful to my parents. In football, it's very
hard to live in this way. The situation with Manchester United is a
proof of that, because I just followed the road of truth. I will always
follow it, with powerful people and in my private life. I can win, and
I can lose. This last time I lost, but I was honest and upright. And I
always told the truth. Now, I can go anywhere and look people in the
eyes. That's one of the best things I have achieved.

Itis not usual for a football player to stand up for his rights
againstthe authorities of such an important club, even putting
atrisk his professional career. Do you think this kind of attitude
maycontribute to stop the madness related to players, clubs and
economicand sport interests?
Well...the truth is I'm an oddball in football. These are very hard
decisions. Of course, it's very difficult for me to make a decision like
that, because the career of a player is really short. However, I just
follow my heart, and the principles I was taught. I think that no one,
nor you nor me, can change this crazy world of football. Yes, some
people may now think: “Oh, so you can also manage things in this
way.” However, that's up to each person.

Do you think sport, and more specifically football, is credible?
As in any other activity, some players, journalists or authorities are
credible and reliable, and some others should not even be there.
You can believe in football. There are good and bad people as
in any other place. The key is to know who the good guy is, and
who the bad guy is. Until the end of my career, sometimes I will
have to live with that. If I know that some one is not reliable, I still
have to live with that because it's part of my job. However, I will
keep in mind who is credible, and who isn't.

What was the influence of football in your life and personal
relationships?
It really changed me, because I was very young when I traveled
to Europe. I was all by myself. I waslucky to stay in many different
countries. It was a very rich experience. I got to know different
languages and cultures. Also, being way from your family and
friends helps you become stronger. That's the best part of it, and
also the possibility of supporting your family. Regarding other
people, I have always kept the same group of friends. I don't have
many people around me. I always stay in touch with the same
persons. However, I think I'm kind and respectful with everyone.
I'm transparent. Sometimes, you have to keep some distance in
football. You never know why some people try to come close to
you. I think it's normal for football players to have some kind of
shield to protect them. When you get to know people, you can
leave it aside. This is normal when people are very exposed.

Whatmakes you most proud about your career: your achievements
orthe relationships you have built?
I'm a privileged person. I'm very proud of what I've done.
Football has given me much more than I expected. I have built
some strong relationships that I will keep for the rest of my life.
I'm also grateful for having met some people. Playing football
is the best thing that could have happened to me. After all,
you may have many or some few achievements, but I'm happy
