Grant Hackett Reveals He Swam in Athens With Collapsed Lung -- November 2, 2004
BEIJING, November 2. AUSSIE distance legend Grant Hackett revealed today on Australian television that he defended his Olympic 1500 meter title and broke the Games record in Athens swimming with a collapsed lung.
Hackett successfully defended his 1500-meter crown, fighting off determined challenges from the USA'ss Larsen Jensen and Great Britain's David Davies with a heroic final 100 meters.
The future Hall of Famer initially said he had battled a bronchial infection at the 2004 Games in Athens, but acknowledged today in Beijing that, in fact, he had had a collapsed lung. Hackett is in Beijing as part of an Australian Olympic Committee delegation.
"My lungs were so blocked and stuffed for so long that it was partially deflated and there was fluid in there – it was fairly serious," he told Australia's Channel Seven.
"It was thought once it cleared up there could be scare tissue on the lungs but I had a CAT scan about two weeks ago and found it was all clear."
Dennis Cotterell, Hackett's coach added that his star swimmer had lost "up to 25 per cent" of his lung capacity in Athens.
Cotterell and Hackett decided, however, not to tell Australian medical officials opf the blockage fearing that they might not permit him to compete. Cotterell said Hackett never even considered pulling out of the race, an event in which he has been unbeatable for the last seven years.
After the Athens Olympics, Hackett gave himself the longest break of his eight year career and is set to return to full-time training by November 12.
Cotterell said Hackett would be fit for the national titles – which double as the Trials for the World Championships in Montreal from March 12-19 and might even contest February's Queensland championships.

新华网悉尼11月2日电两个多月前，澳大利亚游泳名将哈克特在雅典奥运会上成功卫冕男子1500米自由泳冠军，然而，谁能想到他竟是带着仅剩75％功能的“残”肺实现夺冠目标的。
在奥运会期间，他只轻描淡写地告诉媒体他有支气管炎，而真实的状况直到本月2日才由他本人公之于众。
“我的肺‘堵’得很厉害”，已经阻塞了很久，现在它已经缩小了而且里面有液体，这很严重，”哈克特在接受澳大利亚电视7台采访时透露。
他的教练科特雷尔也于当日承认，他的弟子是带着失去了起码25％功能的肺参加雅典奥运会的。但是，为了有机会卫冕1500米冠军，他们并没有把这一状况告诉澳大利亚奥运代表队的医疗人员。
“我们没有告诉任何人，”科特雷尔说，“他一直都是带着这个（肺部的病变）在游泳的，在过去的9个月里他就是在这样的状况下训练和比赛的，但是那时（奥运会时）的情况是最糟的。”
不过，哈克特目前的情况已经有了很大好转，“我在两周前做了一次ＣＴ，证实肺部清干净了，而且没有留下疤痕”。
哈克特在其运动生涯中一直在与支气管病做斗争，在今年早些时候还曾住院接受治疗。不过，科特雷尔表示，哈克特将在明年3月的全国锦标赛前恢复，甚至有可能参加2月的昆士兰州锦标赛。

Henry to race at Melbourne World Cup meet
Triple Olympic gold medallist Jodie Henry will headline the FINA World Cup swimming meet in Melbourne later this month.
It will be Henry's first competitive swim since the Athens Olympics in August, where she claimed gold in the 100 metres freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays.
She also set a world record in the individual event as well as both relays.
Henry will be joined in Melbourne by Athens team-mates Liesel Jones, Brooke Hanson and Libby Lenton as well members of the men's squad, including Michael Klim and Matt Welsh.
The World Cup meet has also attracted a large international contingent, with American gold medallists Aaron Peirsol and Jason Lezak confirmed starters.
Peirsol won gold in both backstroke events in Athens as well as the medley relay, in which he was joined by Lezak.
Emerging Australian breastroker Brenton Rickard is due to compete in Melbourne and he said he was looking to improve on his four silver medals from last month's world short course title in Indianapolis
Rickard said he was treating the World Cup meet as a serious hit out.
"I'm looking forward to racing and hopefully doing some pretty quick times in the shorter races where fitness isn't such a big deal," he said.
"But it will just be good to get back in the racing pool and have a crack again."
The World Cup meet runs from November 26 to 28.
Meanwhile, Sydney will also get the chance to see the vast array of Olympic champions when the Skins event takes place on November 21.
The Skins format consists of back-to-back races over various distances as well as a modified medley event.
It will act as a warm-up to the World Cup meet in Melbourne the following week.

MELBOURNE, November 8: ATHENS Olympic golden girl Jodie Henry will make her return to the pool at the Telstra FINA Swimming World Cup at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on November 26, 27, and 28.
The 20-year-old Queenslander, who won three gold medals in Athens, will be joined by 15 Olympic gold medallists, world champions or world record holders from Australia, the USA and Great Britain when swimmers from 13 countries converge on Melbourne for the three-day Short Course meet.
Henry swam her way into the Olympic history books with her gold medal, world record breaking efforts in the 100m freestyle and as the anchor of Australia’s two gold medal wins in both the 4x100m freestyle and medley relays in Athens.
She and Petria Thomas became the first Australian women since Shane Gould in 1972 to win three gold medals at one Games.
Henry said today: "It is good to be back in the water after my break from training following the Olympics, although I did enjoy my time off and a few sleep ins!
“I am enjoying training with the squad and am looking forward to my first meet since the Games at the World Cup in Melbourne."
Henry will be joined in Melbourne by fellow individual Olympic medallists Leisel Jones, Brooke Hanson and Libby Lenton and her Olympic relay gold medal winning team mates - Alice Mills, Giaan Rooney and Jessicah Schipper in what will be a golden reunion for the girls who took the Athens Games by storm.
Athens 4x200m freestyle relay silver medallists Michael Klim and Nicholas Sprenger and Sydney’s triple Olympic backstroke medallist and Athens finalist Matt Welsh, along with Australia’s fastest man, dual Olympian and Athens 50m freestyle finalist Brett Hawke will spearhead the Australian men’s contingent.
In a star-studded overseas group, US Olympic golden boy Aaron Peirsol and fellow Olympic 4x100m medley relay gold medallist Jason Lezak along with world champion backstroker Randall Bal will headline the US team, which will also include freestyle sprinter Nick Brunelli, butterflyer Deserae Christianson and middle-distance/individual medley swimmer Robert Margalis.
The small but select British team will feature five-time World Short Course 200m butterfly champion James Hickman (1997-2004) and 50m breaststroke world record holder (long course) Zoe Baker.
Peirsol became the fifth swimmer in history to win the Olympic 100-200m backstroke double before steering the US 4x100m medley relay to a gold medal in a world record time.
His clash with fellow American Bal and Australia’s short course maestro Matt Welsh and Russian Olympian Arkady Vyatchanin will be one of the major highlights of the World Cup.
Lezak, who along with South African Roland Schoeman and Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband, holds the fastest long course 100m time of the year at 48.17 and the fourth fastest 50m freestyler in the world.
The barrel-chested American will start favourite in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle but will have a host of challengers, including Lezak’s US team mate Nick Brunelli (third at the US Olympic Trials over 50m) and Russian Olympic 100m freestyle finalist Andrey Kapralov and Australia’s premier sprinters Hawke and Michael Klim.
Lezak and Hawke were fifth and sixth respectively in a red-hot 50 metres freestyle final in Athens won by Gary Hall.
The Russian team will also feature emerging 1500m freestyler, Yuri Prilukov, who finished fourth to Grant Hackett in Athens and he should be the one to beat in the premier distance freestyle event.
The women’s breaststroke events, which saw triple Olympic medallist Leisel Jones break two world records in last year’s World Cup, will be the feature events on the women’s program.
Jones will line up against Olympic silver medallist and six-time World Short Course gold medallist from Indianapolis this year Brooke Hanson; newly crowned world record holder over 50m and dual World Short Course silver medallist Jade Edmistone; World Short Course bronze medallist Sarah Katsoulis and world long course record holder for 50m Zoe Baker from Great Britain.

Phelps visited Ann Arbor last weekend to see a Michigan football game, and he told Bowman he was "tired of not having a routine."
