Welcome back: Tommy Haas returns to the tour after missing all of '03 with injuries. According to Haas' coach, Red Ayme, "Tommy feels as if he's starting his second career. It's a great opportunity for him." The stylish Haas plays an engaging all-court game, backed up by his elegant one-handed backhand and athleticism. He's got a local connection to this event too, as his father is lifelong friends with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ?Vince Spadea, Haas' opponents, credits his improved serve to his working relationship with Pete Sampras' one-time mentor, Pete Fischer. Pay close attention to the way the early part of Spadea's service motion is similar to Sampras' . . . Andre Agassi on coming to San Jose in pursuit of a record-breaking sixth title: "I have the luxury of coming into this tournament feeling like my game is pretty sharp. My mind is certainly fresh, my body feels good and we are sort of on with this year. So I'm not coming in here to get comfortable. I'm sort of coming in here to continue where I'm at . . .I think this is one of the best places to play." . . . Last night's one-of-a-kind celebration of the Davis Cup featured 17 American Davis Cuppers spanning from the ?0s to this year's team that just beat Austria. Among the notables: all-timer Jack Kramer, veteran Todd Martin, tournament chairman Barry MacKay, retired legend Michael Chang, U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick and this past weekend's rookie of the year, Robby Ginepri, who became the first American player ever to come from two sets to love down to win his Davis Cup debut. Speaking for anyone who's ever played Davis Cup, Ginepri said, "It was tough, but you get through it, and that was a lot of fun."
